Hi, I have a 95 Z28 AUTO trans, the only engine mods are headers, PCM program, and small bolt ons. I am looking for a reasonable cam to put in it. The car is a daily driver. A lot of people say to go with the Comp 305,306 or Comp 503. I know very little about cams and internal engine so just looking for some help and facts here. I do want it to have that throaty cam sound but not too crazy. Just a reasonable daily driver cam. Also, Its suggested that I get rockers and springs as well. Any info and tips from you guys will be great !! THANKS !!!Registered User
CC306 is too much for a daily driver car on stock cubes in my honest opinion. Go with something in the 22X-23X duration range. Cant go wrong with a high lift grind such as some of the new come ones like the CC503. It will lope decently by the way with a CC503.
so the cc503 sounds better for a everyday driver, i read all that i really need to go with it was Springs, can I get away with only having springs with this cam ??

Check out the Crane 2050 LT1 cam. Great cam. Wide lsa angle (I thing 116*) with 218* duration @ 0.050" intake & exhaust with 0.498 lift with 1.50:1 RR's. Requires springs. It ran great with a small blower (p600b).

Not trying to undermine mzgp5X's post, but a CC503 is a 224*/230* @ .050 and .503/.510 with 1.5 Rocker Arms. CC503 has a faster ramp rate on the cam's lift, and without getting into the technicalities of it, basically it will lope slightly harder, pull a little stronger, and makes a decent daily driver cam. Since everything is pretty much set up on LT1's with 1.6 Rockers, heres what kind of lifts you would be looking at:
2050 : 218/218 .531/.531 116LSA
LT4HC : 218/228 .525/.525 112LSA
CC466 : 218/224 .608/.603 (Might be .570/.565?) 113LSA
CC305 : 220/230 .544/.544 114LSA
CC503 : 224/230 .537/.544 112LSA
CC306 : 230/244 .544/.576 112LSA
As far as I am concerned, a CC306 is too big for a daily driver 350. If it was a stroker, sure, but ... You can never go wrong with more lift provided you have the springs to handle it. I would look at something mid 220's intake, 230ish exhaust. It will lope a good bit, have very minor driveablity losses, and pull strong to 6,000ish.
Pretty much the CC305/Hot Cam are very very close performance wise. The CC503 will efge them out slightly with no driveability differences. The CC306 is too large and WILL surge/suck in traffic for a daily driven stock cube car. For an LT1, you definatly want to look at something with split duration, with a exhaust duration at least 6* prefereably more than that, larger than the intake duration.
Im sold on getting custom grinds from someone such as Bret. But if your dead set on an off-the-shelf cam, the two I would consider to meet your criteria are the CC503 and possibly that Comp Cam XFI 466. See if you can find anyone who has that cam on here. Do a search for the comp xtreme fuel injection cams and see what comes up.
And if you have long term plans to blow it, get a cam with a WIDE split in intake/exhaust. You want that extra exhaust duration for sure. And low lift numbers are critical with a forced induction motor. If you plan on running a blower, definatly get a custom grind. Turbo cars run same duration I&E cams similar to that Crane mentioned above.
Feel free to email me if you have any questions you think I can help with. Im by no means a cam expert, but I know some of the basics and could at least put you in the right direction, or contact with the right person. CarnageZ28@hotmail.com
Good luck.
