Question Need immediate assistance...

ok... its nothing serious but i have to get this done and finished and have the car ready to drive before i go to work...

ok... i was going to clean my K&N replacement filter... and im gonna clean the whole box too, cause its got dust in it ...

i''ve got the spray oil... for the K&N... but i didn't buy the cleaner... cause the guy said it was a waste of money and that i didn't need it...

what i failed to ask him was... HOW DO I CLEAN IT? go into detail please... i don't wanna screw up my filter and possibly my engine by putting some bad stuff in it...

2nd question:... i never was gonna de-screen (port?) my MAF cause i didn't figure it would help anything.. but now that i look at... a good 20-30% of the airway looks blocked by that metal screen?.... i have heard that its dangerous to remove it... is it? why? how do you do it?

THANKS A TON AGAIN..

sorry my posts always seem to be urgent...
but im a urgent kinda guy...

A waste? It's only $10 or so..

If I remember correctly, you spray the cleaner liberally on it, let it sit for a while to break up the crud. About a half hour or something like that. Then rinse it with a hose (not high pressure, just running water) from the back side of the filter. You don't want to push the crud into the filter with the water.

Shake it out, then let it dry thouroughly. Once dry, follow the instructions for the oil.

Since you don't have the cleaning solution, maybe just use a spray bottle with some warm soapy water? Dunno..

edit -

For the MAF, 6 of one, half dozen of the other. People go back and forth on this mod. I took my screen off years ago and had no problems. At your current stat of mods, I wouldn't bother with it. Just my opinion.

Actually, the K&N cleaner basically is soap. Take warm water, add some dish soap and go to town. When the filter looks white, its clean. After its clean rinse it super good with the hose, and shake the hell out of it to get out the excess water. Then let it dry for an hour or so, preferrably in the sun. Once thats done, spray the filter with the oil until it turns a nice shade of purple. Then you're ready to rock. Dont bother descreening your MAF, the gains are not worth the added risk of damaging a sensor. You *might* see a 1 or 2 HP gain, nothing that you will be able to feel.

There is a snap ring on one side that you pry up to release. IMO, I would leave it on. If you see any benefit from removing it, I would be surprised. If you do remove it, don't damage it, so you can put it back in if you get surging problems from the removal.

If you slip with whatever you use to pry the ring out, the screen will be toast. It is very fragile. Make sure you have the actual MAF removed, so you don't damage it.

Still say a waste of your time.

Very simple. Remove the 4 allen head bolts to take the unit apart. Have you even looked at this thing?
