Need ignition opinions! Delteq or MSD box?

im in the procces of getting a new LT-1 and am debating the pros / cons and cost effectiveness of an ignition upgrade.

Has anyone here had experience with BOTH of these systems? ive heard alot of good things about the delteq and am curious to hear if its worth all that much more $$$ over the MSD 6al.

by the way, the motor thats going in is a stock 93' LT-1 w/ the following:

3 angle valve job
upgraded piston rings , bearings
upgraded cam
ported polished heads
K&N filter
throttle body air foil
SLP 1-3/4" headers
High flow cat
spin-tech catback
Hypertech chip
160 deg. stat
MSD coil

thanks in advance.

Re: Need ignition opinions! Delteq or MSD box?

I have a MSD 6A box, works great, It was on the car when I got it, so I dont have a price for you. But I have had Optispark problems, and I have looked into the Delteq.
The Delteq is supposed to be better, because there are 4 times as many coils as the stock setup or the msd+opti setup. and its 600 dollars or something, and you still have to buy the coils.

I almost whent this route with the Delteq, but I would have had to get rid of my MSD box; and it was just cheaper to get the new opti.

The other alternative that I plan on doing in the future is the LTCC, It uses 8 LS1 coil packs. This I believe to be the best choice. It is like 399usd... But you still have to buy the coils like the Delteq. The LTCC still uses the optical sensor on your opti. but that is not the weak part of the opti.

I would do an LTCC since you have 8 coils. I would think 8 coils would deliver cleaner spark than 4 coils and especially 1 coil. The nice thing about the LTCC too is that it has a adjustable rev limiter and retard control if you ever plan to run boost..

well....i don't know about everyone else but i installed the Delteq and haven't had a problem since. Personally taking away the crappy opti spark is great in my opinion. I have to say that it is a little expensive approx. $700 but it works great. The guys at Delteq were wicked knowledgeable and really helpful when it came to the system. Also i believe it only took me an hour to install the necessary components for the system (coil packs, brain box, and system wires). The only problem is you have to re-run your plug wires. Not sure what type of headers you have but if it's like mine they were a pain (approx. 1 1/2 hours). But other than that the system is straight forward, easy and eliminates the optispark.

The cost effectiveness of the Delteq system IMO is so much better than a stock opti and new water pump. The only problem that you might encounter with the Delteq would be a coil failure (never heard of it though from people). If so its probably $50 or less to buy a new one. As opposed to a cap and rotor failure which happens frequently (probably $250 or more). For example my friend installed a complete new opti and within 2k miles it broke. He was fed up and bought the Delteq, which fixed the car instantly and hasn't had a problem. Bottom line for me is that i didn't want to hassle with the opti after the cap and rotor failed. This sytem is reliable and practical.

O yeah by the way you need to have the optical pickup from your previous opti spark to work the Delteq, hopefully you have that and it still works.

Hope this gives you some help, good luck with the decision

Re: Need ignition opinions! Delteq or MSD box?

whatever you can do to do minimalize the use of the opti spark....do it!
the MSD box does nothing in that direction

and just because there are 8 coils in the LTCC does not make it a better design.... the 4 coils used in the Delteq actually provide more spark then the 8 used in the LTCC/LS1
there was a rather large thread about this at one point in time. use the search feature, you'll find it

i could put 16 turbos on my car (why tho LOL) but it aint gonna run any better then the guy with the single turbo (if it ran at all)
its all a matter of how it is designed and setup too work

in reguards too Joe Overton....every rule has exceptions....

the rest of us are best off eliminating as much of the opti as possible IMO
