need help w/valve spring swap

im going to begin swapping out the stock springs for some EX-612s and 1.6 rockers. i understand the steps on how to do this. but what i do not understand is the part were you have to turn the crank pulley to get to TDC. what does TDC look like. ive turned the crank around so the arrow is pointing to the top, 90*,180*, and 270* but i do not know what to look for.
so if anyone can help me out i will really appreciate it.

by the way those who have installed these springs what height did you put them at. i have a cc305 in there, and will install some 1.6 rockers as well.
please let me know, any help will be great.
thanks
mike

Re: need help w/valve spring swap

how are you doing the spring are you using compressed air to hold the valves up or are you going to rest them on the piston? if you are using compressed air you dont have to have the piston at tdc. it you are resting the valves on the piston you do. what i did was pull all the plugs out (this make it much easier to turn the crank) and got a small scredriver and stick it in the spark plug hole and have someone turn the crank untill the piston come all the way up you can feel it push up the screw driver. I did this with every piston.

i used compress air to change my springs. i also have a CC305 with 1.6rrs but i have the comp986-16 springs and the install hight on those are between 1.75-1.800 i have mine siting at 1.79. that was close enought for my and the guys at comp cams.

Re: need help w/valve spring swap

good idea slp223, i might end up doing that. im not using compressed air. also what would happen if i did not make sure im at tdc. i know that if i do not do this the valve will fall into the block, but what else can happen.

also can i do two pistons at a time, or does it have to be one at a time.
becuase i saw that at the 12 o'clock position the 1 and 6 cylinders are at tdc, 3 o'clock 8 and 5, and so on

it think you can do two at a time but i have never done it. if you do drop a valve you have to pull the head off to get it out. it should not damage any thing thought unless you tried to start the car.
