Need help removing and installing exhaust manifolds

what's up guys and gals? i will be doing an exhaust manifold removal and reinstallation on my 93 Z28. i would get headers but i don't have the money yet. anyway, i need help on the procedure for doing it myself since it will be done at home on axle stands. i also know that the 93 smog equipment configuration is different than even that of the 94 Z28.

I also need to also some broken studs on the exhaust manifold. can an easy out easily remove them? how do i reinstall new studs.

Thank you. all your help is very much appreciated. once i fix this, i will removing two huge exhaust leaks.

Re: Need help removing and installing exhaust manifolds

Good luck getting those broken studs out of there. Fortunately my dad was around and showed me a trick. We had to drill holes half in the stud, and half in the manifold to get them out. We broke or toasted probably 4 bits and one broke off in there which was a problem of itself. The only other way to get them out, unless you are lucky, is to use a torch and get it good and hot. GM puts everything on in the factory DRY. No high temp paste, so the exhaust parts are basically welded together. When you do get those studs out be sure to put the new ones in with a coating of high temp.. RTV I think it is, or you'll have the same problem next time.

Re: Need help removing and installing exhaust manifolds

are the studs broke of inside the head? or can you see part of them sticking out? if you can get them out quite easily with channel locks if there is art of the stud visible. the easiest way IMO is to first remove the smog/air stuff, then go under the car and unblot the manifolds from the stock y-pipe. better have a breaker bar with some mean shoulder mucsles, or some air tools for those. also dont forget about the lone E.g.r. pipe that has one bolt holding it to the passenger side pipe. i did my header install on jackstands so i garunetee you can pull those. just be patient have have an arseneal of curse words.

Before you attempt to do anything, soak all of your bolts down with some kind of penetrating oil and let it sit overnight. That should help when you start to loosen the bolts.

The broken studs are not in the heads. the studs are on the manifolds themselves. They are located where the Y-pipe meets the exhaust manifold, those are the studs that are broken.
