Need help pulling this crank pulley (pics)
Need help pulling this crank pulley (pics)
My crank pulley doesn't look like the ones I've seen pictures of on the internet. It's not spoked, it's solid. How in the world am I supposed to pull this thing? I can't use the normal harmonic balancer puller because if I thread into it, I'd be pulling on that 3 toed thing behind the pulley and I would be pulling against myself.

Does this look normal?

The only threads to pull with are in this three toed thing behind it.

Here's the puller I have, I don't think this kind is going to work, suggestions?
Thanks for any help, this is frustrating.

it does look like an aftermarket pulley but the hub looks stock. the pulley should seperate from the hub though, maybe its seized on. are you trying to remove the pulley or the pulley and the hub?
if your just trying to remove the pulley you should be able to pry it off after the three bolts are removed.
if your trying to remove the hub you can insert a longer bolt (7/16" i believe) into the crank snout and use that for your hub remover tool to press against. make sure the bolt is bottomed out in the crank so you dont damage the crank threads.

When you say "hub" do you mean the 3 toed thing that the pulley bolts too? I just need to remove the pulley only. I got another pulley puller that goes around and grabs onto the back of the pulley, I'm going to give that a try. I need 6 hands to be able to turn it while I'm holding it up there though

The seal that goes around the bottom of the timing cover and oil pan is the oil pan gasket. That, from what I've read is a large undertaking with the engine still in the car.

I got the pulley out finally. I had to use a reach-around puller and grab onto the tiny lip just in front of where the belt goes instead of grabbing behind the whole pulley. The claws just barely caught and it was a hairy experience but it finally popped off. I also let it soak in generous amounts of WD40 for about 2 hrs too.

a lot of pullers don't work correctly on lt1's i heard. i retied using 2 differnt ones and had no luck with either of them. i borrowed the gm one from work and it pulled off in no time. they are a pain to get off especially since you can't get an impact up there

get one of those 3 jaw pullers
i have a UD pulley behind my stock and the stock no longer just falls off like it should. Just go up to autozone and rent one for 20 bux and just put the fingers all around the outside of the pulley and pull away. works like cake
