Need help with problem...Fusible link?
Need help with problem...Fusible link?
On friday night I had started my mothers Z28 and heard a whining noise coming from the engine bay. I thought it was maybe just a little bit of water or something that could have gotten on a belt, it was out in the rain/snow
I was just driving about 2 miles so I decided to just check and see if it was still doing it , Stupid me!! Anyways while I was driving I noticed the volts dropping, in about a mile and halfs time it went form normal (about midway on the guage) to about the a quater of the way. I pulled it into the parking lot and went to get out and see if I could locate where the noise was coming from and right when I got to the front, I heard a BIG POP and my mother shut the ignition off. I popped the hood and some was coming out from underneath the rear passenger side of the block, I could not pin-point it. I looked under the car and found a little rubber sleeve that smelled just the same.
It looked like something that a wire would run through or something. After waiting for all the smole to clear I decided to try and drive it about a mile to my uncles house to have me look at it. I went to turn the key over and I got NOTHING! I could hear power circulating but the starter would not click or anything, checked the battery to see if it was warm, it was about the same as the outside temperature. So then I called AAA.
When the tow-truck guy got there I should it to him and he said it looks like a fusible link. So that is where I am right now. I have not had a chance to jack the car up and look at it, I am planning on doing that tonight or tomorrow.
I know it is not the greatest info, but hopefully I can get some more later tonight or tomorrow, how difficult is it changing a fusible link? And how can I determine what caused it? Would the ECU tell me?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Visually trace the location of the problem as best you can. The computer is not likely to tell you anything. Once you find something damaged, you will be in a better position to figure out or ask questions as to what the remedy might be.
Ok well I finally got a chance to get under the car and I cannot find ANYTHING!!! I tried to trace the wires the best I can and I could not find any problems.
How common is it that the starter could have went?
And the computer will not tell me anything?
