Post Need help and opinions ASAP please!!!!!!!

Ok, just installed the new engine. I have the LT4 shortblock in the car and everything is in place, went to crank the car.. and all you here is a grinding noise real bad from the starter. The shortblock is off a 96vette LT4 auto. Do I have to run the 96LT4 starter to make this work? We did the shimes and that didn't help at all. The car will start after turning it a few times. The flywheel is on proper and everything. I was told that I need to run the 96 LT4 starter though because the way it is set-up, and it wont hit the flywheel, is this correct?

Please reply so I can get this taken care of

Thanks
Mike C.

Did you check tooth clearance the correct way with something like a paper clip? I believe the tooth count on the flywheel is 153, did you get the correct starter for 153? Properly shimed clearance is key using a gage such as a paper clip.

No, the flywheel and the starter being used is the one that has already been used on the old LT1 block, the only thing new with this is the newer LT4 block. I just need to know if I need the LT4 starter in order for this to work. Why else would it grind when it was working fine on the LT1 block? This is the only thing holding the car back from being drivin now.

That doesn't matter. It sounds as though the clearance is not set correctly. Did you check the clearance tooth to valley with a paper clip?

If an LT4 starter replaces an LT1 starter, why wouldn't the reverse also be true?
I have an LT4 starter on an LT1, no probs here...

Did you confirm the starters clearance on the LT1 starter, I think Slowpoke is dead on, There should be no difference in the LT4 Block and LT1 blocks outer dimensions.

Are you sure that is a LT4 "block"? Technically they are the same blocks, just different main caps. Also, you stated this came from a 96 auto car??? I hate to break it to you, but there were NO cars that came from teh factory in 96 with an automatic LT4. ALL LT4 96 vettes were 6 speeds PERIOD.
Hope you didn't get hosed.

Yes, it is a LT4 block, we checked the casting numbers on it before we bought it. I guess I was wrong about it coming from an automatic, guess there isn't such thing from the 96LT4... =\

As far as the starter goes, the LT4 went on with no problem and cranked right up. Nonetheless, I got a LT4 starter for $110.00 from my connection, so weather or not the LT1 starter will work, doesn't matter ..... hee hee
I love the sound when the LT4 starter cranks, sounds pretty cool!
