Need help identifying problem :(

When I start my car it's fine.
I can rev it and it's fine. (well kind of, 3 of my spark plugs were loose)
When I put it into gear and start moving around 1500rpm I hear a metal grinding noise. Almost like brake pads rubbing on an extremely warped rotor.

The car moves fine and once I get past that point the noise goes away.
It's only at arond that rpm that I get noise. I thought it might be the rear tranny mount so I swapped it out but it's still making the same noise. Could it be the clutch? It catches fine and doesnt seem to be slipping at all.

Thanks
Oliver

Universal joints in the driveshaft, maybe? Get under there and check them out. Try and wiggle them, you're looking for any looseness or play in the joint.

I grabbed the drive shaft after I changed the tranny mount and tried to twist it with both hands. No play at all.

Was it out of gear with the emergency brake on when you checked it?

it was in gear and e-brakes on.
should I have done the opposite?
Kind of dangerous to be under the car with the ebrakes off and trying to move the driveshaft.

The E brake should be on as I stated. I just think you can get a better feel of the U-joints with it out of gear.

Does the noise go away when you apply a little brake? You might try putting it on jack stands and turn the rear wheels by hand to see if you can hear it.

Has the car been sitting a while? Are the brake rotors rusty, maybe that's the noise.

The rotors looks fine. The noise seems to come from the middle of the car. Right about where the tranny is. I'm starting to think it's coming from inside the tranny.

pull the cover off the rear and check your gears.

Does broken gears make noise consistantly at around 1.5k rpm?
It's been so long since I've had broken rear gears I don't remember.
I just remember everytime the broken chunk get's stuck it breaks off more teeth and jars the car. Right now the car runs pretty smooth. The sound does vary depending on the rpm. The higher the rpm the faster it sounds. Which leads me to believe it's coming from inside the tranny. I'll keep you guys posted on what I find in case this could help anyone in the future. I won't be able to look at it until middle of next week though.

i had my exhaust loosen up on me one time and the catalytic converter was actually hitting the driveshaft a little at certain rpms. it made a grinding noise and it took me forever to figure it out because at glance when the car was off it wasn't making contact, but under load it was flexing and rubbing. i noticed the converter had some spots where it looked ground down so pushed on it a bit and sure enough, it made contact with the driveshaft. it's a long shot, but take a look.

So I looked at the car today.
Everything underneath is solid. Nothing rubbing.
I've narrowed down the noise as well.
It only makes noise when the clutch is engaging.
Once it makes full contact, the noise stops.

So since it's only making noise during the engagement, does that mean my clutch is bad?
I'm not slipping at all.

The center section of the clutch disk was completely ripped from the outer circle. So when the clutch was engaging the center would spin while the part with the clutch material was stationary.
