Check the sender behind the driver side head, it may have hit the firewall and broken. This happens often when the engine tilts back...ask me how I know

We don't know what year car he has (no info posted), so it might not be in that location. But whether it is behind the intake (late years) or by the oil filter (early years), the OP should check it.

Same here, check the spot I mentioned. You will need a sender socket and an extension aimed in from near the brake booster to get it out if it is broken, feel for the wire and plug to be sure it's connected first. If the gauge is pinned, it's possible you may have pinched the wire grounding it. If the wire seems to be ok, you may have broken the sender, somehow grounding it internally. When I broke mine (and I was aware to be careful before hand; broke it anyway) the gauge was just zero'ed. This is why I say check the wire first to make sure you didn't catch it between the bell and engine block, or short it otherwise. If you have an inspection mirror it would prove very handy. Let us know what you find!
