Need Help fast!

Okay my timing chain broke and I am reinstalling the gears(2 teeth broke) and the chain...My question is when trying to reach TDC on #1 (and 6) How am I supposed to know if its on the intake or exhaust stoke? Thanks

Re: Need Help fast!

when you put the crank gear on the dot should be at 12 o-clock and when you put the cam gear on the dot should be at 6-oclock, you shouldnt need to know about the valve timing unless you are setting your valves???

did you do a leak down test to see if you bent any valves, usually when a person breaks a timing chain the valves hit the pistons and cause all kinds of nasty problems??

more info???

Re: Need Help fast!

The piston approaches TDC on the compression stroke - both valves are closed. The piston approaches TDC on the exhaust stroke - the exhaust valve (and likely the intake, depending on overlap of the cam) will be open. The piston is at BDC at the end of the intake stroke.

Just get the dots aligned correctly as described above, and the valves will be in the correct position. See Shoebox's cam install instructions for a "Timing chain assembly diagram":
