Need Help With Crank Hub, and Crank Gear Removal

Hey,

I am in the middle of my cam install, and cant get the crank hub off. I tried using a POS tool from checker but it didnt work. I am going to go to autozone to try renting their hub puller, and I was wondering if anyone knows what size bolt I need to push against, and if anyone has a part number for their puller that actually works. I was thinking of just putting a 3 inch 1/4 drive extension to puch against. I also was wondering what tool I need to pull the crank sprocket/gear, and can I rent this tool as well? Are these same tools used to install both of these, or are they easier to hammer/pull on. I am really sick of trying to go to the store for different tools, so I am trying to get them all at once.
Thanks,
Brandon

I actually used a longer(6"-8") 1/4" extension with the regular pulley puller. I went slow and it slowly came right off. Im sure it wasnt the best/easiest way but it worked.

Cool, i'll try that, thanks. Does anyone know what size bolts thread into the (ears) balancer hole bolts on the crank hub when using the puller? I think I have the correct puller, but I cant get bolts through the three holes to hold it in place and straight.
Thanks,
Brandon

7/16-14 Old head bolts work great.

The holes in some pullers are not big enough for the bolts to go through.

Thx for the info Rob, the bolt size helped a lot. And yes, almost all the damn pullers i used were too small for the right size bolts, but once i finally got all the right tools, it came off fairly easily. Any tips on removing/installing the crank sprocket?? Im going to tackle that one tomorrow, but it looks fairly simple, just get a two arm puller, one on each side of the gear, and thread something to push off the crank??
Thanks,
Brandon

The rental one didnt work, but the one they sell for 14.00 worked fine, but you need to supply your own bolts because the ones that come with it didnt fit.

A two arm puller will work fine to get the gear off. Just protect the threads in the end of the crank.

I used a steering wheel type puller. Back the hub bolt out and leave it threaded in about 6 threads. Then I used some head bolts to thread into the hub arms thru the puller and started backing it off by tightening down all the bolts evenly alittle at a time. Came right off .

Where can I get the tools to make the crank hub and sprocket install tool?? I cant find a grade 8 rod that is 7/16-20 and about 5 inches long anywhere. I saw someone use this and some washers and a 7/16-20 nut to pull the hub on, and this same tool and a piece of pipe for the sprocket, seems like a good idea.

I found a 3 1/2 in one at Lowes that worked for me....I used a lug nut and a grade 8 washer as needed.
