need help...buying a 97 z28 m6..sorry for long post.

hey guys,
i have been coming to this site for a long time. never registered b\c i did not own a z. well i have wanted one for a long time and finally looked at one that i was very close to buying. It has a history of problems, the day the dealer got it somebody drove it and somehow bent 3 valves. anywayz... 3 weeks later after they supposedly got it rebuilt i got to test drive it.

the car has 81k miles and supposedly has an lt4 conversion done to it. well we drove it and man it has no power at all. i have driven many and this is the weakest one i have driven but its very nice looks wise. the oil presure was under 20 at warm idle and would jump to about 40psi while under acceleration. the seems to have a little power just driving around easy but when you floor it is very doggish. it hesitates when it gets to about 5kish rpm seems like it wants to open up but it doesnt. my v6 mustang pulls better( maybe not, but its pretty bad )
tomorrow we plan on doing a compression check, clutch is fine car used to be modified, still has roll cage and boost gauges so it indicates heavy mods. need help, i want to know whats wrong b\c i can probably get a good deal and really want the car. must pin point whats wrong so i can fix it.

p.s. i am very sorry for the long post but i have learned from visiting the site the more info given easier to answer. looking forward to being a Z member

also i didnt make it clear the hesitation is almost like a very slight sputter but it doesnt pull hard at any rpm. slight lifter tick my mechanic said but we were not able to run any comp checks or anything of that nature due to time. just looking for your thoughts on what it might be

I would skip this car and buy a different one. Sounds like trouble and $$$ (unless that is what you want to buy).

you are not the only one to tell me that. thanks for the advice. if i had other choices i would have left it, but financially im in a whole due to my current car and this car seems the only way for me to get an f-body without paying 11K+ for an lt1. i have done very very little work with these cars but have a mechanic that i can work with for pretty cheap. that is why i wanted ideas as to what it was so i could decide wether it would work out or not. if not im screwed.

11k?!
that lt1 better be gold plated

stop shopping at dealerships for used cars, its a rip off
they are at a used car lot becasue nobody else could sell them
get your local auto trader out and start calling people
check your local paper
it takes time and patients(sp?) but you'll find one, just stay away form the dealerships find some dweeb with a T/A that drove to science fairs or some grandmother with an SS that drove to church and thats it
these cars are out there
they are cheaper then a dealer
and most importantly they are well taken care of
and no way in hell am i going to buy a car with a boost gauge and roll cage with a non documented LT4 conversion, yeah im sure that car was never beat on lol also if the dealer rebuilt the motor three days ago, i wouldnt be out thrashing on the car if i where you that has the potential to do a hell of alot of harm to a new motor, if they rebuilt it, but i've never seen a used car dealer do that much work to a car

ya i asked him about a break in period. he was like no need

the problem with buying from single party is that i have a very very deep loan with my current mustang. ( never buy a mustang!!!) and selling it would not pay my loan off. so dealerships are were i must look. good advice though man thanks. i did a search but nothing really turned up that compared to this. most were low rpm sputters and such. i have knowledge when it comes to these cars but very very limited. so i am open everyone's .02

my advise, as much as it sucks is to keep the stang until you can sell it and pay off the loan, im serious dont buy from a dealership, you will regret it, i know from experience lol

11K will net you an LT1 with almost no miles on it! You can find many LT1s in good shape, but maybe some mileage on them for 5000.00 or less. And for somebody to bend 3 valve right off the dealer lot, it sounds like they can't drive a stick all that well. I would leave the car alone, it has too many obvious signs of previous abuse.

If you are in a hole, now, this car could put you deeper and may not even be driveable for a while. Don't be over anxious. Find a better car.

Yep get the loan down on your stang and keep your eyes out. Upsidedown on a loan is not a place to be.

I just looked through our local bargain post and there are running driving great shape cars for under 9 out the wazoo.

Be patient and get the car that is in good shape very very minimal problems and especially what you want.

Stay away from this car.
There's plenty of other nice ones. Look in the for sale section or check autotrader.
