Exclamation Need help with alternator!!

I'm having to work on my z28 tomorrow by myself. Problem being I have no idea where the alternator is, sad but true. Anyway, I'm looking to see if anyone can give me possibly a link with printable directions to replace my alternator so that I can have them with me under the hood....either that or a detailed explanation on how to do so. I know it won't be difficult, but I have to locate the thing first!!! Your help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Kelle

Re: Need help with alternator!!

The alternator is located on the top left side of the engine (if you are facing the car from the front). You have to disconnect the battery, pull the serpentine belt and unbolt the alternator. I thinks it has four or 5 bolts.

5 bolts to remove, located on the passenger side. Don't forget to disconnect the 2 wires to it before you start pulling.

that picture should help you out a little bit, if not search that site a little bit and you might find something else.

The first thing you need to do is get a socket and rachet on the tensioner pulley to move it and "release the tension" on the belt to remove it from the alternator (there should also be a picture of this under the hood on the radiator cover). I'm pretty sure for all the bolts you will need a 13mm socket or wrench.

I hope this helps you out some.

13mm socket for the serpentine tensioner, 14 & 15 for the alternator bolts.

Re: Need help with alternator!!

the alternator is held in by 3 bolts, a power nut, and an electric connector.

remember to unplug you battery before touching anything.

i reccommend buying a chiltons or a haynes manual before working on it.

this link is a pic with some instructions.

the round thing is the alternator, and its surrounded by the word boxes...

Look in my cam removal guide. The process includes removing the alternator.

What's even better is know you did it RIGHT. Lol. With the info from the awsome people on this site, you shouldn't have any problems, and if you do, we're always here. Good luck on tackling your LT1 yourself.

yea that too lol

i really have no idea waht an opti install would cost at a shop, but it cost me $240.02...and 80 bucks in some tools that i didnt have. id say i think i saved myself about 2500 bucks in labor for all the work i have done to that car just myself.
