Need Head

Ok... I have a 95' Z28 which for some odd reason blew a spark plug. So now I need to replace the head according to the mechanic. I saw the port and it is all rusted... kinda wierd. But here is my question how hard would it be for me to do it on my own? What kind of cost would I be looking at? I assume it would be cheaper than the $3600 that the shop wants to charge me... any input would be appreciated.

Re: Need Head

Your mechanic is an idiot....an aluminum head is easy to repair no matter what type of damage...tow your car home and take that head to a machine shop to have it fixed.

The head will need at minimum a spark plug insert $50 max
Surfacing that one head should be $50
Clean and pressure test $50
Gaskets

Very easy to put back together.

Re: Need Head

$3600 is an insane price, you need a new mechanic.

Re: Need Head

Will Aluminum Rust?> Never heard if that.

I also think the price is way too high. Find another mechanic.

Re: Need Head

The rust in the port is probably rust stain from the b;ock. You might want to have your cooling system flushed.

Re: Need Head

Hell,I wouldn't even pull the head.I would Heli-Coil it on the car and be done in 2 hours. Then ya could give me the 3600 for being so quick and done while ya wait.

Re: Need Head

Did the sparkplug blow out? Are the threads just messed up in the sparkplug hole? Where is the rust color again, when aluminum oxidizes it is white.

If it is just the parkplug hole have it helicoiled and replace the sparkplug , done.
