need a few opinions please!!

ok just blew my 350 up on n20..

rod went through block.

Im now in the process of either getting a 383 or 396.

its going to have my 1.6 LT4 rockers on there, prob a 306 cam, and most likely on stock heads for now. Cause im getting either block with forged pistons, forged crank, 383 or 396 block, oil pump, and a few others for 5150$ installed.

I will be running 150-200 shot on it. Now i wont have to worry about the engine blowing up this time. My tranny is already rebuilt stage 3 rebuild with everythinig u can think of.

Now on stock heads and a 306 cam (396 block) you think ill be putting down a good 360-380 rwhp N/A?

good enough for a high 11's on n/a?

my car on the old motor ran a 12.5 @ 1.6 60' foot @ 108mph

please let me know asap..

Thanks

Randy

If your gonna spray it, make it a 383 instead of a 396.

If you want to work out the math, all other things being equal, its generally agreed that a 383 will produce about 15% more power than a 350.

So 33 cubic inches, about a 15% gain, from a 383 to 396 is 13 cubes so that would ( If its proportionally, which it most likely is not, but this is a ROUGH estimate ) yeild maybe a 6% increase in power. This is assuming the heads/intake/everything else is not bottlenecking it.

For an estimated 5% increase in power, its not worth taking the cylinder walls so thin for something that will be spreayed on a regular basis. If it was my motor I would go with a 383 for sake of cylinder wall thickness and block stability if nothing else. For a less than 13 cubic inch increase, its just not worth it.

Big inch smallblocks do best N/A ... Well, their more reliable I mean.

a 306 cam on a 383 is not too radical, so that combo would be fairly streetable.

Also, if your going to spray it all the time, spend the extra few hundred dollars in machine work and have it converted to 4 bolt mains and line bored ... Its cheap insurance on a hard worked bottom end.

Also, just curious, what were you spraying on your 350 stock bottom when it let loose? I want to spray my car in the spring or summer but dont really have the money to for a fully forged rebuild first. So I was thinking of spraying a 100 shot on a stock bottom bolt on LT1 ... Thanks ... Also, how often did you used to spray it before it finally let loose ?

i sprayed a 100 shot in it roughly 30 times...

on 116k motor...

bearings i think were going out so i bet that gave out which sent the rod through the block.

Had tons of metal shavings on my drain plug (magnetic)

ill prob go 383 cause it revs faster!

Don't forget to mention the ring package on a 383 vs. a 396 unless you go with 5.85 rods and pay a ton for pistons.

True True ...

As much as I critique the 396, I think that one day I WILL build one. Just so that when people ask what it has in it, I can be like "396" lol. Everyone knows thats a "hot" motor even if they know nothing about cars ... You say 383 and most people have no idea what it is cause they never heard of it. Or they ask if it was a Dodge engine lol
