Need Clutch Advice (did a search)...

I think the stock clutch in my Z28 is starting to go, so I wanna start looking for a good clutch for what i do with the car...

Current mods in sig (nothing major), but I plan to go with AS&M headers, Hotcam kit, mildly ported heads/intake, and 4.10 gears in the future. The car is a daily driver. I rarely get to the track now, but that may change with more power mods

I was thinking of getting a SPEC Stage 2, which I have read good things about, but some people here seem to have bad luck with them, some dont

I have hared great things about the McLoed Street Twin setup, but would this be overkill for me? Also, for the $900+ from ThunderRacing, what all does this kit come with?

Thanks for the help!

Well.. Alot of people like to go w/ the SPEC clutch.. i guess it's a good price as compared to the Twin.. I for one wouldn't put one in and from what you have listed you have/going to have more mods thani.. Buti sprung for the twinand have never looked back.. I am not sure what people mean w/ overkill.. I've heard putting a 9" in a Bolt On LT1 is Crazy and so on and so forth.. But why do things twice?? Do it once do it right.. NOw the Twin does tend to have "Some" issue's but most are resolved fairly easily. So the final choice is.. How much are you willing to spend.. And what are you getting for your $$$.. The Twin comes w/ the clutch, upgraded master, flywheel, andeverything needed to install including flywheel bolt's.. So its pretty much bolt on and go.. No harder to install than a stocker.. Now if you go w/a spec. you'll have toggle switch like engagement and the constant fear of not IF it will go.. its WHEN it'll letgo..

To me the twin is just overkill for what most people need. I just installed my spec stage II that I got for $404 shipped and I couldn't be happier. With the mods in the sig it drives almost like the stock clutch but grabs much sooner and harder. Also, Im using Nitto DRs right now and it doesn't slip at all on the drag track from 4000rpm dumps off the line to 6200rpm 1st to 2nd shifts. For the price you can't beat it.

is it overkill when i have replaced 3 Spec clutches in under 5K miles? Stage III"s at that.. i had n o problem's w/ slippage.. until they blew up.. "Star" said its a design flaw.. they stopped selling kevlar on the Stage III's and sent me a ceramic.. Well after that one self destructed on the street w/o seeing ht track.. i told them what i wanted them to build.. they gave me it and i sold it.. bought a twin and have never looked back.. not only is it twice the surface area.. its all twice the "WEAR" area.. you'll change your clutch before most w/ a twin have to.. So its 2 clutches in ONE.. Lot of money.. but it comes w/ a flywheel.. anda new master.. So. i can get Twin's for about 850 or so.. and when it gives out.. send it back and get it completely rebuilt for 325 SHIPPED..

Yeah I heard Mcleod is by far the smoothest performance clutch worth while getting out there, except for the heavy clutch pedal, but whatever, its worth it.

Here is what happens if you don't buy Mcleod:

I've seen the centerforce in action and it is pretty decent. Most clutch problems can be brought down to how it was installed and how you beat your car. the stage 2 is chattery a bit when light shifting but it grabs like hell. mcleod's are good clutches as well it boils down to what you are going to accomplish with your car and how much loot you have.

Well i think i will be getting the Street Twin then...thx for the info

I like the idea that everything i will need comes in the package...makes it worth the extra cash to me

So let me get this straight then...

Street Twin setup from Thunder Racing comes with-
-Clutch
-Pressure Plate
-Throwout bearing
-New slave cylinder / clutch master cylinder
-New flywheel

anything i missed?

also, would you guys recommend getting just the Steel Flywheel, or is it worth it to spring for the Aluminum... anyone with an aluminum care to chime in?

The ST is the way to go. This is about as unqualified a recommendation I would make. It is an excellent piece. Very high quality, perfectly usable on both the street and track. If you are going really fast, the problem is that there are no SFI bellhousings for the LT1/T56, and AFAIK the McLeod flywheel isn't SFI certifieded either. But these are only issues when you want to run faster than 10.00. That's one reason I went to a TH400.

Another advantage to the ST: for ~$400 you can send it to McCleod for a complete rebuild. Good as new. In fact, it looks to me like they sent me a new clutch with my old flywheel (resurfaced). It lasted for 8,000miles with ~70-90 passes at the strip with >700hp and >800ft.lbs. at the wheels, including a few of my patented 3rd gear starts. With normal use, it would be nearly indestructable.

I had the Al flywheel, but I don't think it's necessary.

rskrause, you said you used the aluminum flywheel. did you notice any difference with it, like quicker revs, etc.? i mean, i would think that having lighter spinning mass would make it rev ALOT quicker....or am i wrong?

thx for the replies guys, keep em coming
