need cam help. called comp and crane, still undecided

hey all, thanks for your help.

specs:
383 stroker from scat w/ JE SRP pistons running about 10.5cr
stock heads, hand ported stock size valves
full length headers with borla exhaust
ported intake with 58mm throttle
3.73 gear, manual trans
1.5 rockers (hadnt bought yet, but may as well use what i got)

i'll be buying new springs/lifters/shims/retainers with the cam, so needed springs will be bought with cam

i was thinking GM847 or CC306. i already had a 383 with the 306 cam and wasnt really satisfied but it was a good all-around cam

i'll be using this on the street and am looking for decent fuel economy and decent power...not max power.

advanced induction is what id recommend, a custom cam costs barely any more and then you get the most out of your setup.

Since your not looking for max effort.. I would steer away from the GM847,cc306 and go a little smaller you'll have more usable torque lower in the rpm band for a better seat of the pants feel and better economy

Depending on how the rest of the car is set up and exactly what you want. I'd look for something in the mid 220's duration with lift in the .580-.600" range on the intake and lower lift .530-.550" on the exhaust with a pretty narrow duration split like 2-4 degrees. If you can stand a bit of cam surge and all that goes with it take the lsa down into the 107-109 range due to your low compression. If you were in the mid to high 11's for compression ratio you could maybe sneak by with 112lsa without costing yourself a bunch of tq in the midrange.

It wont be any high rpm hp killer set up like that but it will be one snotty bitch cruising around, plenty of tq at any rpm.

The ai cam kits are pretty good, but with your valve sizes and compression I would like to see a tighter lsa and more lift so it can breathe a little more. Thier 226/234 is what i would use in your case, but that big exhaust duration is going to cost you tq below peak and some economy.

Ai can manipulate any of the variables/factors on any of their cams.

To the OP - why did you go with a lower compression?

i thought that was stock....any way, i got the higher compression kit, the highest recommended for street applications. JE SRP pistons, flat tops.

any way, i'll give AI a call.

Stock CR was 10.25 +/- with a fat quench area. You stroked for a reason, and you came short on the CR and potential for the motor by doing so. Along with higher CR and smaller quench area you could have optimized fuel economy as well.

The cc306 is a very common cam and is and was used in 1000's of 383's with great success. I don't understand quite what you are saying by you weren't pleased with it. If you were referring to fuel economy........well I hear Prius' rock Generally speaking you don't hear 383 and fuel economy, if you want to utilize your torque (added displacement) and keep it streetable and not have to spin it to the moon take a gander at the cc 465. Sure it seems small but it makes gobs of torque and thats what you drive. It won't make a whole lot on the top end but it wil shred your tirs and ten bolt on the bottom end for sure and net some decent gas mileage.
