Need advise on getting the most stubborn oil filter off
Need advise on getting the most stubborn oil filter off
This thing is so well strung on there it is twisting and distorting the canister frame (god damn fram). I just bought the car. I've tried a strap type filter wrench, channel lock, and combination of, it just wont seem to get loose. It only moves a couple of MM and gets worse it seems. Im changing the oil cold as im installing headers. Is that the problem? This is my huge snag so far. Im ready to drop the drivers side manifold but this is in the way. Im not sure its the gasket... tried razor blading it a little... what the hell. Im really worried about going further and completely destroying the canister. This should be so simple to remove.
please dont recommend punching a screw driver threw the can. It only ripped the can more this thing is on so tight.

I had the exact same problem with a Fram on my Formula - 12 years ago. The threads were so poorly cut that they galled onto the filter adapter's mounting threads and eventually the whole unit unscrewed from the adapter.
I ended up taking a "cap" type filter wrench, drilling holes on all the sides, drilling holes for at least 6 self-tapping screws, and screwing them into the canister. That got it off. The paper-thin can on the Fram was twisted and collapsed pretty badly when it finally unscrewed the mount thread nipple from the adapter.
Now you know where the Fram products got their terrible reputation from.

I have the same issue but on my Truck not my car. Channel locks and making sure your not *** backwards since your upside down. Make sure your lefty loosy and not righty tighty.
Ive had to shove a screw driver threw one before and hit one end with a hammer to loosen one up. Good luck.
This thread is Useless without pics!!!!!!!!
