Need advice on choosing the right cam.

Idealy, I want my car to sound something like this........
http://www.compcams.com/base/multime...ompcams278.mp3

I don't know what kind of car this is and I realy don't know crap about cams but I've been trying to learn some All I have to learn from is the internet and it doesn't seem to be helping a whole lot.

What I'm looking for is:
1) That nice sound from the link above
2) I don't care about super high RPM's because I won't be racing it much
3) Good low to mid/high range power

I have a 97 LT1 and all I have is a cat back and ram air. I'll probably be getting headers and rockers of some sort when I do the cam.

Comp Cams http://www.compcams.com/base/multime...ompcams278.mp3

Crane Cams
http://www.cranecams.com/master/apps/chevy40.htm

Is there anything better out there?

How much driving will you be doing?? Is this a daily driver?? I noticed that you said you didnt need it to rev high and wont be racing that much. If you get a cam you should get some 1.6 rockers and definately some new springs. So if I were you I'd get the Hotcam Kit. Comes with all of the above for 500 to the door.
You'll be happy.

DITTO on the hot cam... No programming is required for the cam... but if you want that sound you can have it programmed to make it a bit lopeyer.. its pretty much an all around cam... BUT if i were you I would do it right the first time... I had a hotcam kit in my car and i WISH i would have gone bigger.. I would go CC305 or maybe a BIT smaller (not the cc304) those cams are great id say.. I ordered a CC 306 because i just dont wanna have to do another cam swap.. Cmotorsports is running a special GP on cam kits.. Its till the end of january, they will give you EVERYTHING you need and it wont be pricey.. I would go that way instead of the hotcam kit. The hot cam kit is 500 to your door but dont forget about gaskets.. which brings you right up even with the cmotorsports GP.. You get gaskets and all (im pretty sure..) check the thread in the vendor section title "ask and you shall recieve another famous cam GP" or something like that.. Price is INCREDABLE! callthem up and they can get you squared away, youll hang up very happy and have your mind made up! also if you dont know much about cams they will explain it to you!!

programming for any cam is HIGHLY recommended.
my recommendation is the Xe224/230, with ported heads i ran the times in sig.

do lots of research before choosing a cam.
the search button can answer ALL you questions

Thanks for the replies guys, they're all helpful. I did a search for cam but I didn't come across anything that talked about the sound of it so I had to make a new thread. A good lopey sound is on of the things that I realy want.

I drive it maybe 5 thousand miles a year and it is basically a daily driver. Does the hotcam kit produce good sound like I'm looking for? I've always thought that was a more smoother sounding cam.

Woah, have you dynoed that thing?? That's a pretty good number, something along the lines of what I'm looking for once I get the car running right.

The cam that would be ideal for your car is the CC305. There are two versions of this cam that you can obtain through thunder racing. The first on is the CC305 114 Lsa and the second is the CC305 112 Lsa. If your looking for a more aggresive lopy sound go with the 112 Lsa. They also carry the insky dual coil valve springs and shims to match the cam. The 1.5r can be used on this cam and computer tuning is not completly needed unless you want max power from it. The cam sounds a little more lopy and aggresive than the LT4 hotcam and is an awesome mid range power cam. Good luck on your selection.

Just listened to the video so here is some more. The cam in that video sounds like it may be a little to big for your application. I may be wrong but it sounds like a 110 Lsa cam with big lift # idling at 700-800 rpm. The cam sounds sweet but for a fairly stock application I don't know If I would go this route. The CC305 112 has almost that sound but not as radical as that cam. Once again good luck on your selection.

i dynoed 356rwhp/349rqtq with the stock fuel pump crapping out in the high rpms. i was also trapping 106mph when i dynoes.

i changed the fuel pump to a walbro 255 and bought some DR and now i trapped 115mph.

i suspect im in the 380rwhp range. my raceweight is 3540lbs.

Here is an idea of how your car will sound. I took this video in germany after I got through putting in my 383. The new motor in this video has only been running for about 5 minutes of it's new life and I was still working on bugs. This is an fyi the more cubes the motor has the more it will swallow the lobe of the cam shaft. This cam on a 350 should sound more intense than it is in my car. The cam in my car in this video is the CC305 112Lsa. The exhaust is open after the cat so it's not as loud now but still sounds really good flowing through my flowmaster exhaust. I actually chose this cam just because the military registration inspectors are A@@holes about noise. I hope this gives you an idea.

Picking a cam by sound

But anyway, cams with "lopey" sound are also high rpm cams, by and large. The sound comes primarily from early opening of the exhaust valve. Cams with that characteristic are typically best in the high rpm range because they have long duration and narrrow LSA.

thats what I though... A cam is not for you if all you care about is sound.

No, it's not all about sound for me but I'm not a drag racing nut like a lot of people here either. Of course I want the power too but I'll sacrifice a few hp if I can get the sound I like.

Besides, from what I've seen, there isn't a real big selection of cams for lightly modified lt1's and it looks like the hp gains are going to all be in the same ballbark but at different rpms.
