Name that clunk... Rear or trans

When driving at hwy speeds or stop light driving ONLY when hot the car develops a clunk coming from the rear area. It is only heard when off idle and again hot. when driving there are no sounds and shifts firm and on the money. I don't think it is the trans as it is relatively new in OCT with about 6-7k of NORMAL driving plus it is a stage II rebuild. I did just change my rear gear oil three weeks ago with semi synthetic and I did fill it. I know my way around cars and do ALL my own work. This noise has me baffled.

It also does it a bit when hot when going into rev. There are no leaks on the dif so there is oil there.

I'm about to raise the a$$ and look what it could be so suggestions are welcomed.

It could also be a binding brake, not sure though.

if any clunking happens around corners, i would check out your panhard bar. hope it helps.

Nope not around corners. Going straight only.

Thanks

Still could be the panhard bar. I have just about the same issue. I checked the panhard bar and bushings, they look fine. I think i'll change them anyway just incase, maybe use some poly bushings instead of those soft factory ones.

Jack up the rear end of the car and take a look. It could be a shock thats gone bad, LCA, panhard bar, rear sway bar.

It might be the tranny mount, but I doubt it. Worth taking a look at for grins.

Thanks for the replys.

I didn't get a chance to get under there yesterday. However I don't think it is the bushings on panhard bar or shocks. Reason is it seems as though the clunk sound also holds the car back even if it is just for a sec. it is not a lot but you feel it and it is only off idle.

What can be described as the sound is lets say you power brake a bit and before the wheels spin the brakes make a noise as the try to hold the car back. That is similar but add more of a metal sound and that's it.

What about your universal joints?

I have heard of them clunking when needing to be replaced.

When you replaced your diff. fluid did you use the additive for the ltd. slip?

djc485 I actually didn't use any additive. I thought semi synthetic was good. When I bought the oil I looked around and asked for the additive but they looked at me like they had no idea what I was talking about.

Besides this is my 5 f-bod from 94-98 Zs and I changed the dif oil to my 96 and 97 and never had any problems not using the additive.

What is in it?

I had a similar problem once. I had a broken tranny mount, and a bent rear axle. You might want to check the torque arm too.

It could be a U joint but the car I got my Alum DS from had like 30k plus I have no vibs at any speed and no rear whine either. I've still got my 342 complete rear to put in. I just like saving on gas.
