Mystery coolant problem

The radiator is full, the overflow tank is at the right level. The system has been "burped."

Still the car has little or no heat, and the low coolant light comes on quite often. Plugged thermostat perhaps?

I looked up thermostats at autozone.com and they have all different temps available from 160 to 205. Being winter time, I am tempted to either stay stock or maybe to the 205, and then drop it back to the 160 or 180 for summer.

And it's been a while since I changed the lt1 thermo (previous car in fact). I thought they weer more expensive? AZ has them as low as $2.99. I think the hypertech was the most expensive at around $18.99

Aren't they different because of the reverse flow cooling? I just want to make sure their computer isn't incorrect...

The light is just the sensor I am guessing, I just unplugged mine instead of replacing it. And the heat problem may be the heater core. Do you mean no heat from the vents? Or do you mean low radiator temperture ?

The inside heat...it takes forever for the car to blow warm air, and even then it doesn't get very warm. Yet the gauge reads around 180-190 degrees.

I would do a flush on it, but I think my hose is frozen and under several inches of snow right now.

Sounds like your coolant temp is about right, so the car isn't running hot. So the low coolant message must be a bad sensor. I had the same problem with the heater. I flushed the core and now it blows much warmer air, and after the car has been running a while, I'd venture to say HOT air.

Buy the car used?
Check to see if it has a thermostat. If it's been removed then that would explain the long warm up time.

The LT1 thermostat looks like this:

[compliments of shoebox' page]
Also the stock thermostat in an LT1 is 180[not higher]
