Is my tranny going bad?

Just got a '97 Trans Am and whenever I am accelerating from a stop and I get on it the rev limiter kicks in. The engine can be hot or cold, doesn't matter. It usually happens around 3 - 4k rpm. I have been told by one dealer that the car should do this and by another that my tranny is going bad. Anyone have any input on this?

From your very general description it sounds like the tranny is slipping. You just got th car? Does it have one of those 30 day warranties?

my car did that a long time ago.. it would get to a certain RPM and just start sputtering and cutting out.. turned out it was a bad coil wire.. when i replaced that i also replaced all plugs and wires.. ran good as new

misfiring at higher rpms if often a bad coil or coil wire. Hitting the rev limiter sounds more like the tranny. Perhaps do a fluid change and see what happens but once it slips there isn't much you can do except rebuild or replace.
