I'm have 3.73 gears, 28" tall tire and going through the traps at about 6800rpms going 128.xx mph. I just don't think it seems right. I can't imagine having to step down to a 3.42 gear to allow the car 150mph trap speeds.

What do you think??

Buddy, You converter is way to loose. Get it tightened up.

Vince

P.S. With 410 gears and 30 inch tire at 7900 rpm = 158mph in my car.

Just to elaborate a bit on what Vince said. In high gear, the tranny is more or less "direct drive" and shouldn't be slipping at all. It sounds like you have a very loose converter.

spraytheway, how in the world do you get the stock block to rev to 7900? I just carbed my LT1 the other day and would like to rev high. What are the essentials in doing this?

Well the engine was built by a very reputable builder but I guess the biggest things are allot of compression a really really big roller cam(for 350 based small block) a good set of heads (AFR 220's they are listed in the for sale section) and a proper sized carb with allot of dyno time. I actually have spun over 8500rpm but that eventually wiped out the crank so now I keep it under 8200rpm.

For more specifics PM me.

My compression is very high because its a racing engine only. just under 15:1. I don't street drive. Get as much compression as you can for pump gas. A really good sized roller cam ( solid roller ) like 250- 260 @ .50 with .600 lift and a really good set of heads. Port match you intake and you will fly. The more cam the more rpms. Run a good distributor and vacumme pump and off you go.

Use a good single plane intake. I am partial to Super Victors myself

Getting a worked over SBC to spin high isn't that big a deal, it just has to be built right.

A friend of mine revs up to 7900 on a good launch, and spins it all the way to 9000 rpm in his 69 Firebird. Its a flat 10 car all motor.

See thats what I would like to think to is it's the convertor, but I was getting about the same results with the 3800 stall I had in there and now with the 5k stall in there. The 5k, was just the 3800 rebuilt, and he said it looked brand new when he opened it up. Could it be possible the tranny itself is slipping?

Also what kind of negative effect would the tranny slipping that much cause on ET's if any?

Thanks again!

Can you borrow another converter to try? Reprogramming a converter will not always prevent you from "driving through it" It has more to do with fin angle then stator design. If you can borrow another converter and try it. Doesn't matter how wrong it is as long as you can use it see if the problem is in the converter and the tranny. 400's don't using burn up so I still think its converter. If you lived closer I would loan you one of mine.

Yeah I might be able to borrow a converter, just what a pita to change it I need to get a tranny jack at my house, I'm sure that would make life much easier.

Thanks,
Jason

Try just pulling the driveshaft and loosing the crossmember but not all the way off and then slide the trans back. It works for me but your right its still a pain.
