Question My temp gauge is moving all over the place??? HELP

I don't know what's going on with my temp guage. When I start the car the temperature gauge is normal, when I get going it redlines to hot (for a minute), then drops to level. It does this the entire drive. UP and DOWN! It scares me because it goes up as far as it can!
The coolant light is on also. I think it may have something to do with this. But the coolant is full, there are no leaks. I did have to add some coolant a month ago, but no biggie.

If anyone has any thought or knows what this is, please help me out. Thanks so much. I can't figure it out.

Scott

Maybe the wire to the sensor is burned and intermittently grounding out.

Thumbs up

Thanks for your help. Is that relatively easy to do myself?

Anyone else have any other possible reasons for this happening?
Thanks.

I agree with Shoebox

If it is moving around that randomly, and u have checked coolant, etc. It is probably a problem with the sensor or wiring, particulary in the grounding.

Are ur fans going on? SES light?

Did you try bleeding the coolant system?

SpeedDemon-
Do you mean draining the coolant and refilling it?
If so, no: but that is what I am going to try tonight. I know that Camaro's don't like you to pour coolant in them, they want you to drain it first.
Thanks.

Try bleeding the air out using the brass screw near the throttle body. If you have air in the system, that would cause these problems. Warm up the car to oertaing temp and then place a rag below the brass screw, and open. When you get a steady stream of coolant, close the screw. Be careful to not get coolant on your opti.

It also may be your thermostat. If it's getting lazy it's time to replace it.
