my friend has a 98 with 4.10's , his mods are weiand intake , lid , and loudmouth exhaust. In the 1/8th hes in 3rd gear at 6300rpm at the end. Hes afraid if he gets more power hell have to shift to 4rth before the line.
with my 4.10's I was at the top of 4th at the end of the 1/4...But I also shift really high. I now have a 9 inch with 4.33
Havent been to the track yet but shooting for 11's
I have m6, cc306 cam, stock botom end, stock heads, headers, exhaust. 4.10s run the 1/4 in a 12.7 at 115 but I didnt really get on it till bout 1/3 of the way down in fear of breaking to wimpy 10 bolt. But now I got some slicks and a good clutch and I am ready for 11's.

I have a chance to buy a set of 3.73 gears for my car. I have an A4 car with 3.23. Can I simply change gears or do I have to change the whole rear-end ?

Yes both 3.23 and 3.73 rear carriers are 3 series..
2.73's have the 2 series carrier [meaning 3.23^ won't fit it]
I just used that calculator... and I dont think my gears are stock
