My Racetronix fuel pump install with trap door thoughts

Last night i installed the a new Racetronix fuel pump setup in my Camaro. The stocker had just a hair over 140k and was still pumping, but i think it was holding me back in power and still eating up lots of juice even with the harness. I cut the access hole in the trunk for the install and it took me from 6pm to 11pm start to finish for the swap. Three of those hours i spent waiting for the glue to dry on the bucket. The Racetronix kit was really everything you need down to the paperclip needed to remove the sending unit connection. I would recommend the Racetronix kit for anyone doing a pump that wants a truely bolt in set up its the way to go. My only complaint on the Racetronix setup is i thought the instructions were a little lacking, but its nothing that you can't figure out on your own. This was my first ever electric fuel pump install on a car. I've done plenty of mechanical pumps before but this is my first electric, in tank, fuel pump install. So it was all new to me and i figured it out even with the lacking instructions. I would also suggest for people doing a fuel pump install for them to go with the trap door method. As it took only a few hrs, minus the glue drying. Besides saving time if you mess something up it sure makes it quick and easy to get the pump back out. When i first put the pump in the plastic bendable clear fuel line was in the way and was keeping the float from having full movement. I didn't realize this until i started the car and the gas gauge was reading about a 1/4 lower than when i started the project. Had i dropped the tank i would of been suicidal having to do that again. Instead it only took a few minutes to get the pump back out. I took the car out and kind of got on it once and when it hit 4500 it started losing traction the first time its done that in a long long time. So i think i have my low hp problem solved, maybe i still need to do some more testing. I guess i'm posting this just to let people know the Racetronix setup is probably the best bolt in replacement fuel pump setup for the LT1 fbodies, and to give a thumbs up for the trap door method.

Good information. I know i went in through the trap door on mine too. The walbro 255 (not bought through RaceTronix) decided it was going to lock up and only put out 15 psi 2 days later. I was SO happy i had that door cut in the car. Only took a few minutes for pump #2, which was free of course.

I still could never convince myself to do that. Although I also pulled mine wheile the rear end was out, made it a little easier.

Re: My Racetronix fuel pump install with trap door thoughts

I second the Racetronix and trap door method.

The Racetronix kit is outstanding, made to fit, but unfortunately doesn't come with instructions. Having never done a fuel pump before that was kind of an issue with me, but the guys at Racetronix sent me some directions that got me headed in the right direction. I haven't installed the wiring harness yet because I'm dead waiting on a new opti, but it's pretty straight forward.

Cutting the hatch was extremely simple. I really didn't think anything of it. One of the easiest things I've done on the car yet!

Glad to hear your install went well. I'm getting ready to do the same. If you have any other hints/suggestions/recommendations, please feel free to share. What did you use for the trap door?
Thanks!

Unfortunately racetronix doesn't recommend the trap door method, and they might even void the warranty if it is installed that way.
Their explanation is that if you do it the normal way you also flush out all the crap in the tank, if you do it the trap door method all that junk will stay in the tank and clog up the new pump.

I just used a piece of flat sheetmetal and painted then undercoated it. I think i put 6 sheetmetal screws holding it on. The only problem i ran into on the whole install was having to remove the pump again to move the plastic bendable hose out of the way of the float arm. So before you put the pump in make sure the float arm has complete travel or you'll be pulling it again.

Well i'm not worried about the warrenty i would replace the pump several times rather than drop the tank. Also these cars aren't that old and if it is daily driven with gas always in the tank i don't see how there can be significant rust in the tank.

Re: My Racetronix fuel pump install with trap door thoughts

Are you guys just using the Racetronix Fuel Pump or are you using the full (240.00) setup with like a wiring harness? I am about to do this mod to go with my LT4 heads/cam install and would like to kind of know what every does.
Thanks

I have the fuel pump kit. The one for $240 and comes with the wiring harness. At first i just added the harness and it jumped the voltage of my car from 12.5 to about 13.5 because my old pump was eating up so much juice. Maybe i'm crazy but i think the extra juice finally getting to my old pump killed it because a few days after installing the harness my car started having trouble starting. After i swapped out the old pump the car is a beast again. I suggest the the combo. If not you could keep the new pump from living up to its potential by the lack of voltage getting to it.

Re: My Racetronix fuel pump install with trap door thoughts

if you go to Racetronix site they say that they've seen lack of voltage to the fuel pump cause a loss of up to 25% fuel pressure. In my personal case the voltage jumped up one whole volt just adding the harness. So why keep your new fuel pump from living up to its full potential with lack of voltage.
