Is my opti-spark broken?

After making numerous useless attempts to get my new motor started, I pulled the opti and noticed that it did not spin in a perfect circle, it spun in larger circles, much like a rotary engine. The shaft wobbles slightly. Is this normal?

I also noticed around the spline that the spring holding a rubber grommet on the shaft was not on correctly. I looked into the timing cover hole and saw a similar spring lodged in there as well.

Do I need a new opti? I can remove the spring with tweezers, but should I remove the cover as well to be sure of any other possible debris?

In the below picture, you can see a spring around the shaft base. Mine is not on all the way. When I look throught the timing cover hole, I can see ANOTHER spring just like this laying in there apparently attached to nothing!? Also, when i spin the shaft by hand, it does not spin in a stationary postition, it moves in larger (wobbles) circles. Does this mean it's detroyed?

That "spring" in your cover is partof the gasket. If its touching the seal its probably ok, if its floating around by itself it must have popped off.

If the drive in your opti is moving like a rotary open the opti up to see whats goign on. Sounds like the thing may have come apart?

Does it sound like a major problem? Is the opti broken? It just has a slight wobble to it when it's spun. Can I re-install the spring in the timing cover? Lastly, what would cause all of these things to happen, an improper install?

lol good point. . I'd say its toast! The play in the shaft most likely messed up the optical disk inside the opti.. Just pick up a new one.

Check out this guy.. Good price!

Opti Link!

Thanks for the advice. A new opti is definately going on the car. I had it inspected today by a veteran GM Master Tech and he said the opti is definately destroyed and must be replaced.

The person who installed it is probably going to buy a new one.
