I tried to jump start it today with my Caddy. She cranks over no problem. Interestingly enough the oil pressure gets up there while cranking. When I turn the key I hear the "whine" from the fuel pump. I guess its still either fuel pump or fuel pressure regulator switch? or the opti. Not much of a choice considering they are both big jobs.

Any other thoughts out there?

Thanks again...

Here's what happened to me, the rotor in the opti broke of and was floating in there (this happened to me twice with 2 different opti's!). It sounded like pebbles and of course the car wouldn't start. When it died I got a bunch of backfires, and pretty much like you are describing. My money is on the rotor in the opti, but better replace the whole unit. And it isn't that hard to do, shouldn't take more than 2 to 3 hours.

Well in your sig it says you need to fix you stumble. I would bet the opti gave up on ya, all the problems you described could be opti caused.

Yea now that the car doesn't run, I tend to agree with you, especially after all the sensor changing I have done.

Well I tried to jump her again. This time I got a bad fuel smell so I assume the pump is working.

Thought I'd bring this thread back to like in case some of the experts didn't see it the first time.

Anyone else have something to offer please do.

Thanks

I hate to sound like a broken record, but I would bet it was your opti rotor. Those items (opti, rotor, etc...) CAN just go all of the sudden. My brother's heads/cam and full exhaust 96 Z28 had an opti go out. It made the same kind of violent backfires. Took us about 3 hours to replace and viola, problem solved. Good luck

Since it's a '94 and probably has quite a few miles on it, the opti is my guess too. Did the check engine light come on?

I had a similiar problem on my car and it was the opti. Check the coil, wires and plugs first. I have seen the coil do strange things including that popping sound.

Would anyone know what the shop manual says the labor in hours should be for the opti? I spoke to mechanic this a.m. says 3 hours alone for water pump. I'm trying to guess how much this is going to cost.

when did you add the "things to do: fix stumble," to your sig?

might be the opti

might also be a burned wire on your headers, though the car should start up even with a burned wire.

Call Jason Cromer, he has lower prices and the shipping is not as high as gmpartsdirect.
Dont get the cap only, change the whole unit.
