My gas in the tank of the Z is "Boiling"? Scary!!
Well I just had gotten back home from a long hour cruise. Anyway when I got out of the car I heard what sounded like a major air leak in a tire but it sounded like it came from the muffler, so I let it sit about a half hour while I had lunch. It was a hissssssssssssing sound. Anyway I just went out to pull the car in the garage from the driveway and the car took a while to start for the first time that I can ever remember. I got the car into the garage and shut it off again, and again it was making the hisssssssssing sound. I crawled under the car and heard a gurgling/boiling sound along with the hissing sound. I quickly opened up the gas cap to see if it would relieve any pressure and it did, and instantly the hissssing went away but the boiling sound was still there. I am thinking for some reason the gas had gotten to hot but if so then why all of a sudden?
This is the first time this has happend to me?
Thanks
Eddie

Hmm... Sounds like your fuel pump is on its way out bro. The pump is getting real hot & boiling the fuel, hence why it also took a while to start.
The hissing sound your heard was your high pressure relief valve located by the tank so if the pressure exceeds normal it'll relieve the pressure, this is caused from the boiling you are describing, it'll also mainly happen when car is standing around/idling becuase your charcoal canister isn't being purged unless you are cruising at a certain speed/rpm.
Hope this helps.

I would be skeptical about it really boiling. Perhaps there was some air trapped somewhere that was making it bubble. Boiling? I just don't see how it could get that hot.

Well whatever that boiling sound was it wasn't what I would want to hear from the tank. So Shoebox, you agree that it is an issue with the pump going bad too? I will try to start it again in a little bit. I guess I can get a Fuel Pressure gauge and check it.
Thanks
Eddie

I had a weird happening on my Grand Prix a few years ago. It was getting excess pressure in the tank and when I would take the cap off, air would just practically blow out the filler (and I was a thousand miles from home on vacation
). It did not seem to bother drivability, but my first indication of something wrong was that the fuel pump was sounding louder. Eventually it cleared up on it's own.
That was almost 4 years ago and it has not been a problem since.
Well I had it on my list to put in a new pump anyway. Maybe now I won't procrastinate anymore.
I just hate to have the car break down on the road especially if my pregnant wife is with me. She hates the car and the $$$ I put towards it already, can you imagine if yesterday I didn't make it home with her and her very pregnant mood swings with me?
Thanks guys....
