my car gets hot

I put new coolant in it, and if I let it idle it will get into the red on the temp, its been like this since I got it, also when I plug in the sensor on the passanger side the low coolant radiatior. while driving it will stay at 190 as long as im goin at least 45. and the fans are comming on, why does it get soo hot at idle? and hot much is a new radiator, mine has a crack that has been repaired
thanks
Ross

Just to let you know, I had the same problem with my 94 camaro. It really isn't so much a problem because if you check around for information on the camaro, you will find that it is normally set to run around 190-200 before the fans will even kick on! Not to worry though, you can either get a hypertech programmer to reprogram the ECM to turn the fans on at a lower temp, get a performance thermostat to fully open at 160, or get a unit from Accel (summit sells them) that comes with a new temperature sensor and module to plug into the wiring harness (clips in, real easy) and will again make the fans come one at a lower temp.

What I did was reprogram the ECM with the hypertech programmer and put a low temp thermostat in. I haven't been in the red since!

The PCM reprogram is expensive because of the computer that does it. The hypertech programmer I bought was about 140 on ebay. The Accel part I mentioned was only like 40.00 I think. The hypertech programmer also claims to increase horsepower by adjusting timing advance, fuel economy, etc. I didn't dyno it before/after so I won't claim what they say is true. I was like you though, I just wanted it from getting so damn hot at idle and low speed. There is one consequence about having the fans come on at a lower temp, it makes your heater suck during the winter!

The stock fans don't come on until 226º. You may have a problem with the temp sensor in the water pump if your fans are never coming on. That sensor tells the pcm the engine temp. You can read the temp from the pcm with a scanner. Testing on the sensor and circuit can be done with these instructions .

It is pretty much a waste to have your fans come on lower than ~185. Your fans would stay on a lot and they really don't need to. It is not necessarily the fans that cause the poor heating in the winter, but the 160º thermostat.

I did not understand what you were saying about the low coolant sensor.

A new radiator is around $200.

You did use GM Dexcool coolant right? The orange crap? The owner of my car before me replaced the orange dexcool that is stock with regular old green coolant. Mixing the two seems to cause it to kind of glop up, and the car will not remain cool. When I bought my car, it had this overheating problem at idle, but cooled fine while the car was moving. I went through replacing coolant temp sensors, and fan relays, and none of this worked. Finally, I drained my rad. and replaced the upper and lower hoses. Took the rad. down to a shop to have it flushed. Now my car stays cool as a cuecumber. ;D
