Is my alternator dumping?
Is my alternator dumping?
Sometimes my gauge thing inside the car would fluctuate back and forth at idel a little but was still in the normal area. Now that it is cold out when I start my car m y gauge reads on closer to the "red" area not the yellow one. Since I have a 93 the guage numbers are messed up but it is reading closer to the higher numbers like almost a quarter off of the half position to the right. Hopefully thats not too confusing. Anyways IT tends to not go anyhigher when driving and when ideling it will do the fluctuating thing. Car starts up fine, is the alternator going to **** soon?
Re: Is my alternator dumping?
Try putting on all the lights, the compressor and the fan on high speed and see what that does. You will be amazed. They all do it. All you need to do is check the voltage across the battery with the engine running and everything turned off. It should read about 14volts DC.
If you want to go a step further and really check out the alternator, set your multimeter to AC and measure from the negative terminal of the battery to the large output post of the alternator. If the reading is over 0.03VAC, the diodes in the alternator are going south.
