My 96 Impala ss
Hi everyone I recently bought a 96 Impala SS with 65,000 miles on it for $8,000. Now that i have the car i have been spending money on performance parts like a madman. So far I bought a complete LT4 kit, exhaust, underdrive pulley, BBK 58mm throttle body, K&N cold air, built the tranny up, 3.73 rear, MSD igition system, NGK Iridium IX Spark Plugs, hypertech 160 thermastat , nitto450s , hooker headers, and a cat delete. None of these parts are installed yet. My question is will my car break 12's? My ricer friends tell me it wont because my car is to heavy but i think different.
Re: My 96 Impala ss
It takes a bit of power to get those beasts into the 12's, but you are definetely on the right track. Check out this website for all your Impala SS needs...http://www.impalassforum.com/cgi-bin...i?action=intro. Hope that helps you out!

First off.... killer deal on that Imp!! 8 grand for those miles is unheard of. Whoever sold that was in a pinch for sure.
Those parts with the proper tune and driver are a sure thing for low 13s and possibly 12s.

Re: My 96 Impala ss
Just curious how much did you pay for the LT4 conversion? I was considering it at first, then started reading up on LT1 H/C packages. A favorite around here comes from Lloyd Elliot.
Cheaper with way better results!

Re: My 96 Impala ss
Should have been asking questions BEFORE you pissed away gobs of cash on mediocre parts.
The LT4 kit is a favorite of the ignorant you can do a LOT better for a lot less money.
Underdrive pulley is a waste the only benifit it can offer is to a road race car where it can delay power steering overheating.
The 58mmTB is OK but for your goal a ported stocker would have done the trick for a lot less, I will say this is what I run because I got it cheap used needs some mods to it to work right.
K&N intake is overpriced but functional there are a ton of other options you could have gone with.
"Built the tranny" few local shops are compentent with this tranny for perormance use and with it should have been a GOOD 9.5" converter you probably would have mentioned if you had bought.
Ignition upgrades on a 96 in particular are a waste unless you are running boost or nitrous.
Iriduim plugs cost you a whole lot more than the plain copper 95% of us would have told you to run(NGK or Autolite $1.75 apiece or less), fancy plugs are for longevity or sales gimicks NOT power producers.
Nittos, I don't think I know anyone who has made those actually work well.
Hookers headers for this car are one of the worst to install, hope you got them coated or buy spares of everything within a foot of them, there are a suprizing number of better options for this too.
Cat delete is not as effective as one might think bet it makes you feel good about pulling one over on the smog police.
In decent weather give this crap a good stall, tuning, and tires and you will likely get your 12 but not consistently.
Before you get too offended by my comments consider I have a Caprice that has gone 12.5 in JUNE and 12.8 in high 80 degree heat with no track prep. With the slicks on I can not screwup enough to make a 13 second pass. I even have a handfull of 13.0 slips on street tires and I have not even gotten to run this combo in good weather yet.
Took me a while to get here and I wasted a lot of money along the way, first thing I bought for the car was an ignition with what I spent today I could have instead a used nitrous system and be running 11s consistently. When I began to tinker the Impala forum linked was just forming so I did not have the resources available today. Best advise I can give is stop buying stuff and start reading, spend some time on that Impala board, yes the f-body shares a lot with the b-body but they are different cars and the vehicle specific stuff over there will help a newbie out a lot.
