Re: MSD optispark. good or bad?

Im not saying MSD opti's are bad/good based on what others have posted, just on my personal expierence. I doubt all the people with great working MSD opti's post when they work great, people tend to post when something breaks haha. Trust me, when mine breaks I will be posting on here. I agree though they had issues when they were first released. The only reason i bought the MSD is because when i built my new motor the 2 year old AC Delco unit was cutting out above 4000 Rpm. I figured if I was gonna drop another 350-500 dollers on a engineering failure i would try another brand lol. If/when i do it again im gonna get a Lsx 24x conversion, or get a LS motor.

Re: MSD optispark. good or bad?

Only had mine for 2 months before the oil seal in the timing cover behind it leaked oil into it.
But my car never ran as well as it did after putting the MSD in! The mechanic said he tweaked the timing "slightly".
Anyway, MSD sent me a new one under warranty even though I told them it was not their unit that failed. EXCELLENT CUSTOMER SERVICE!!!
Car is in shop now getting the new MSD new Opti installed along with new NGK Iridium plugs, Taylor Thundervolt 8.2 wires, a Cloyes timing set and Pacesetter mid length Ceramic headers.
Can't wait to get it back...
Hopefully this new MSD opti will last longer than the OEM unit. This is the 3rd opti in this car.

Re: MSD optispark. good or bad?

I just wanted to add to this thread, I have went through two msd optisparks, in less then two years. The first one dead out of the box. The second the Optical sensor just quit putting out the low res signal. Msd is garbage! Got both from summit

Just give it time, the one year warranty hasn't run out yet. It'll fail right after it does.

Re: MSD optispark. good or bad?

I think the fact in the matter is that Mitsubishi does not make the sensors anymore (the good ones) and there are only 2 suppliers for the "new" sensors, so the optical part is a crap shoot. There were MSD rotor issues, but I have had a MSD cap and rotor on my car for 7yrs and no issues.
