MSD Opti-sparks?
MSD Opti-sparks?
Looks like they are backordered on summit and jegs til mid to late October. Anyone know where to get them sooner? $150 for em, cant beat that. Compared to an AC Delco one for $289!!
Re: MSD Opti-sparks?
But the cap and rotor is the actual parts I thought go bad, not the "opti" part itself? If this is the case why replace a peice that is not bad? And where can you get the complete opti for $220 shipped? Thanks. -Matt

I spoke with Dal on the phone today, hes on vacation but has the optis in stock and can have it to me by friday of this week. Anyone that helps a customer while on vacation scores a plus in my book, plus you cant beat the price.
Re: MSD Opti-sparks?
A "normal" cap and rotor is $125-135 the MSD is JUST a cap and rotor for $150 BUT is 100% unproven as even though they have been taking orders for a friggin year none are shipped I have heard one report of one single unit making it into private hands. So this part everyone loves to talk about as being so great is completely unproven.
As far as why pay $220 for a whole new opti, well you need a special socket to get the opti apart to change the cap and rotor and have to pray you don't snap the screws which have a nasty habit of doing just that and again even the most basic cap and rotor will cost $125+ and while the electronic inside don't often go bad they certainly can, so the $220 guarantees a smooth install and not having to buy any tools you will only use for this. Not saying nobody should do just a cap and rotor there is a good chance just that will allow you to get another 100K out of an opti. Also not saying the MSD kit will be bad should it ever actually be released, just don't want people to go around believing it is an improvement till it is actually proven to be one.

Re: MSD Opti-sparks?
MSD hasn't released the cap and rotor yet because they're still having reliability/performance issues with it. I found this out directly from an MSD rep a few weeks ago.

Re: MSD Opti-sparks?
I believe MSD had some manufacturing problems with their new Opti cap and rotor kit (insider knowledge) and are still working to set-up production. Therefore, it will not be available for some time, maybe next year. Also, there is more to go wrong with an opti-spark than just the cap and rotor (shaft, bearings and optical emitter/receptor). Personally, I believe the complete replacement GM opti is currently the best way to go. Also, MSD is a really great company and I use several of their ignition components.

Finally a high quality Cap and Rotor for the front mount LT-1 distributor! LT-1 fans have been searching for a cap that could deliver the performance of the LT-1 and MSD is happy to bring it to them. Remember, changing the cap and rotor on this engine is no walk in the park. So when you do it, you want to make sure to install the best parts possible and the MSD Cap and Rotor deliver.
The all new cap housing is injection molded from a special Dupont material that provides extreme strength and high dielectric properties resulting in less chance of breakdown causing a misfire. The terminal paths are encased in a durable epoxy compound for even more protection. The rotor is also an all new molded piece with a brass/stainless rotor tip design.
Two models are available to cover all your LT-1 needs!
