People mistake marketing for quality. MSD is a sticker you see everywhere in motorsports so it has to be wonderful.

You have the 95-97 msd opti which would mean the gm unit you used would be different than what I would need, I believe. Do you know the gm part number I would have to order to work with the 93-94? Out of all the post in this thread this has been the most informative one in regards to the question I had on how to rebuild the unit. This was not intended to be another bash thread on the msd opti because there's plenty of those to go around as it is. Also, about why people would purchase the unit in the first place. It doesn't help that SEMA gave it the best new design for that year during their show.
It's easy for people to say switch back to the gm unit but after spending $500+ on the msd opti I'm hard pressed to revert back and think it was all for nothing.

I doubt MSD makes two significantly different Optis, other than to change the drive interface on the back, and the harness connector. Whatever problems people are having with the 93/94 units will probably be identical to the problems with the 95-97 units, except for the possible dowel pin issues.

The factory Optis had different internal designs because it was an evolutionary development. MSD designed both units at the same time.... although it appears they have had to make a lot of running design changes to eliminate the numerous defects.

The back plate for the cap and rotor that I purchased doesn't even line up with the holes on the msd unit though. It's compeltely different then the backing plate for the original unit I have. The original one also had legs that insert into the metal plate that covers the internals of the units. The new plate has no legs on it to insert into the metal plate that covers the unit. I gotta snap some pictures or something because I can only imagine how confusing this is to understand. Both are listed for a 93-94 though.

Why don't you ask MSD for help? They know what changes they made in response to the numerous problems they had/have with the unit, when they made the changes, and what parts interchange and what parts dont.

Or.... are you comparing MSD parts to GM parts? This is really getting to the point where its unclear what you are doing.

Pretty much just trying to figure out the best possible resolution at this point. MSD is unavailable until January 1st and I leave to go back to Florida on January 3rd so I'm sorta on a deadline here. I have a feeling it's not going to get finished and the car will sit for another year.

The following pictures are of the original cap and rotor (on the right/part #8381) and the replacement cap and rotor that msd offers (on the left/part #8481). Also take note of the metal piece that the original cap and rotor slid into, it has 3 slots to hold the backing plate in place, as well as a nipple fitting.

Based on the lack of responses it seems that I'll be paving the frontier on this one.

how did you check to see if it was hitting on the inside of the cap?

To hell with all of that MSD crap. Pretty sure we told you that in your first of five opti threads.

GM AC Delco. thepartsladi on eBay. Under $300. That's what you should have done in the first place. Cut your losses and go with what WORKS. I'm spinning a new ACD opti to close to 7k and NO hiccups.

I ordered the msd cap/rotor from Summit racing thinking that would solve the issue with the msd cap/rotor that self-destructed. The problem was that it wasn't a direct fit to the original unit but rather the stock oem opti. I was able to get into contact with msd tech and they covered the rebuild/upgrade under warranty. I received the unit back from them fully refurbished and am waiting to install it once I return back to Michigan eventually.

Moved to Florida. Michigan's unemployment was nearing 30% where I lived so I cut my losses and took the plunge south
