msd opti question

ok so i recently bought a msd unvented opti for my 1994camaro...the stock opti took a crap at 103k miles and it was also unvented...my question is this...on my stock opti it had a plug on it to connect to the car...the msd came with a pigtail and on the end of the pigtail is a connector that's bigger than the stock opti's plug...why is this??? also am i supposed to thread lock something on the new opti?

The MSD comes with the new wiring harness that replaces the existing harness on the car. If you trace the current harness thats there up to the intake manifold, you will see the larger plug. This is where the MSD plugs into.

I would loctite the rotor screws. Double check that you have the square o-ring for the cover as the round one tends to get pinched when installing the cover. My MSD came with the square o-ring, I think thats all they use now but just take a look to make sure.

Good luck with it.

Good luck with the Opti! After I installed a Vented MSD Opti on My 94 Z28. It died as soon as I moved the car to the front of the house.

But its made by MSD, its a nice red color and its costs $500. It has to be better than stock GM stuff.

NOT!

I used red loctite on mine. It should be fine. The o-ring I am referring to is the one that seals the cover to the base of the unit.

The msd optis have been pretty well documented as being hit or miss. I am running one because it was an easy way to go vented and I needed a new unit anyway. The 93-94 delco optis are not as cheap as they used to be....over $300 wholesale price.

The extra money seems to be worth it. GM parts are not what they used to be and I heard through my dealer that their parts are coming from the lowest bidder..... I picked up a new timing chain from my dealer yesterday and its stamped made in china....its going back!

Its sad....that being said, the msd is probably made in china too since I could not find a sticker on it that stated where it was made.

So far its been good. No real difference from stock, it seems like it seals better than my delco did. Watch it take a crap tomorrow now...lol

It did seem like a well constructed piece....very smooth movement of the rotor...etc

Good luck.
