I've had it since it came out. About 5000 miles and counting.

I installed my new MSD distributor last night and everything seems to be OK. I have a bracket race tomorrow and another on Sunday, so after this weekend I'll know how well it runs. I had a random high RPM miss that I hope the MSD fixes.

Here are some photos.

My first one only lasted a week. Well not even. LOL When they replaced it last year it has been working with out a problem. Even lasted thru a bad water pump. Spinning 6800 RPM

Do you believe the MSD problems were limited to the early productions units only?

Through my research, seems like evryone who bought the Opti in the early stages of production had the problems, others who bought recently are happy..

"The Engineer"- Now where did you buy yours from? Did you use the Oring or did u get a proformed gasket?

Other than that, looks like a very clean install!

I ordered it this week from Jeg's with the NHRA racer discount and saved a few bucks.

And, I used the O-ring that came with the MSD. Which was compressed some while installing the cap. Is there an issue with the O-ring?

Yes there is one:

http://home.comcast.net/~markpoulton/dist.pdf

If its not installed properly or if the o-ring slip while youre thitgthening the cap it could bring this problem.

Mine work for 60miles then died because of a faulty o-ring seated

Im waiting for my new one...

I thought MSD had replaced the o-ring with a gasket.

Today was the first runs on my new MSD distributor. I just got back from the track a few minutes ago and here’s the ugly story! I had three “perfect runs” (time trials) and my LT 396 engine never ran better (real clean without a miss, or any high RPM pop). Again, everything was perfect on those first three runs and I’m turn over 6500 RPM.

Then during the first elimination round I had some high RPM miss-fires (but I won). During the second round the miss got a lot worse (but won again) and by the third round it wouldn’t rev over about 5200 without a “terrible miss” (lost big time).

So, I don’t think there is any question about it, the new MSD went out after only three runs! No one has the bad luck I have and I’m really disappointed with the MSD ($400+ for the part and several hours of my work). Anyway, I’m pull the MSD tomorrow and I’ll remove the cap to see if I can tell what’s wrong.
