MSD Ignition.......

Where do you hook up the crank trigger wire? I've got an MSD 6A on my '94 LT1/T56 in my '88 T/A. I'm very close to startin' it up, but the MSD is givin' me hell.

Re: MSD Ignition.......

Try these..
http://www.msdignition.com/pdf/pdf10.pdf
http://www.msdignition.com/pdf/pdf9.pdf
Also here's all the MSD instructions available online:
http://www.msdignition.com/downld1.htm

If I understand the Q properly you are trying to hook up that 'crank trigger' wire?
It isn't used for an LT1.. the opti provides that info.. or are you running a different distributor setup? If so look around on the page and at the various GM links and you should find what you need there..

Re: MSD Ignition.......

On the 'Wiring a Dual Connector Coil' MSD schematic, it has this, from what I can see:
1)ORANGE from MSD to PINK that was originally from Igniton Switch
2)BLACK from MSD to WHITE that was originally from OPTI
3)WHITE from MSD to WHITE that was originally from OPTI
4)RED from MSD spliced to original PINK Ignition wire AND PINK from OPTI

Is this correct? The only problem with this is that there are 4 wires that run from the OPTI and they go to the PCM and none of them are WHITE or PINK.
The wires that come from the OPTI are all resolution signals and ignition feed and such. HELP!

Re: MSD Ignition.......

I see you are looking at this:
http://www.msdignition.com/pdf/pdf9.pdf
But looking at this [the diagram for the harness install for our LT1's]:
http://www.msdignition.com/pdf/pdf10.pdf
You can see that all the connections are going from the coil, factory plug TO the coil, or the MSD box, not the opti[all connections are within the harness terminates at those 3 locations] so I hope you didn't [or aren't going to] cut any opti or ICM wires..
The pdf9 diagram is for earlier dual connector coils[not LT1's, tho the coil I believe is the same] therefore the shown 'distributor' connections. If I were you I'd just invest in the MSD p/n 8876 wire harness for the MSD to LT1 8876 is for 93-4-5 and 8877 is for 96-7 years. The harness makes it a 'plug and play' deal..

I do believe in looking at the diagrams that the 2 wires you need to connect to can be gotten from the old [removed ] coil connector tho..
I have one on my 94 but can't really remove it to see what goes where.. if i had one off the car I'd do that for you..

Using this for reference from shoebox' site:
http://shbox.com/1/95_ign_system_schematic.jpg
you can see what wires go to the coil..

From what I can see you need to know which coil plug wires to connect the red, white, black, and orange from the MSD box to, since it appears you do not have the 8876 MSD harness.. [which I highly recommend BTW, since then you don't have to cut factory harness.. and as you will see, there's a coil connection that isn't THERE on the factory harness either]
Also looking at my car and comparing to diagram msd 9 pdf,the coil on a 94 does use the pink on the coil that the diagram says not used, and it does not use the white on the coil that says used[that says 'goes to msd black]..

Took some doing [and this is difficult to do w/o drawing a diagram]but here goes:
the easiest ones:
From MSD box:
Fat red to batt +
Fat Black to- chassis ground

Now the other four.. you are going to have to remove the factory coil plugs and cut the wires etc [I wouldn't]:

These go on the factory coil connectors that you have to cut off:
Red from MSD box splice to both pink wires that were going to the factory COIL CONNECTORS before you cut them off.[not to the connector]
White from MSD box splice to the white wire that was going to the factory COIL CONNECTOR [NOT to the coil] before you cut it off [not to the connector].

Orange from MSD box to the PINK wire next to where NO WIRE was, [not the pink next to the WHITE wire on the 'other' connector] on the factory COIL CONNECTOR [ this connected to the coil LOWER drivers side connection]

NOW the hardest one[impossible w/o the MSD adapter harness?]
Black from MSD box to to where NO WIRE was connected to the coil [on the UPPER drivers side of the coil] , on the factory COIL CONNECTOR [that connects to the coil] Not sure how you are going to do this one!..
I highly recommend the MSD harness 8876 for this..
But the above is where the MSD wires go to and from on my 94Z..
The harness is plug and play.. you disconnect the 2 coil plugs, then plug them into the single MSD harness plug that goes to the box, then plug the one MSD harness plug from the box to the coil..
