Thumbs down MSD Cap/Rotor

Well, after only 1 racing season on the New Msd Cap and Rotor it broke Friday night at the track.
Huge Back fire and the car shut down. Exactly at the end of the track. The little screws broke off and sent the rotor flying. These were lock tight in and silocone over the heads last year. No other damage to the car. I ran on the stock opti set up untill I thought I was upgrading. My opinion is it's not worth it. I replaced it with a stock unit from Dal. Wanted to let you guy's know.

The screws actually broke in half. Wow aint heard that before. Sounds like crappy screws rather than a problem with the rotor. Those silver ones dont appear to be the GM torx headed ones which are the ones I would have used.

Could you have overtightened them and weakened them?

Although its hard to tell from the picture, the screws appear to look like cheapie screws... I'm no engineer but they do remind me of something I'd use to screw in a computer case...

After several calls to MSD they said the screws have been updated to allen head in the last few batches Tech support said there were some problems with the first few batches. They also offered to send me a new cap/rotor under warranty I pay shipping both ways and it would take 10 to 14 days. I'am going to pass on the offer.

Hey John,

Were you on the nitrous when this happened? No matter if you were or were not but it seems like those screws were damaged by something.

Where did I read that your oil pump drive shaft also broke? I don't see it here but did I read that on impSSforum.com?

I would think the motor went into "rattle" mode and caused those items to break., well, even if the opti rotor did come off I would still suspect my engine had some other problem. Reason being, every single time somethin g like that happens to one of my motors, (oil pump drive shaft breaking, rocker slipping off pushrod, head gasket blowing), it was caused by detonation----rattling the motor).

Even if you're not going to use it, you could sell it.

At least use the rotor, the stock ones can come apart. Had my stock one flew apart, the rotor was still attached but the brass blade was off. I since then modified it so it won't happen again.

Rotor Fix

Sounds like just upgrade the screws and you should be fine.

I think I got one the first ones, it had unbelievably bad fastners. The screws for the rotor were shorter than stock but the base of the rotor was actually thicker. The heads of the screws were tiny and it came with washers but using them would make the thread reach even less, didn't matter though the washers were too wide to fit in the recess in the rotor. Complete junk.

I used all the original opti faster except for the extra one on the cap.
