Re: Movements in engine temperature (picture)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I remember reading in either CHP or HOTROD magazine that 210-220*F was optimal for fuel efficiency & full combustion on the LT1...I'm not saying his car doesn't have a problem, but as long as it doesn't exceed this amount, why worry?

Could be your waterpump. My car was running hot on the highway right before my pump went out. How many miles on your car?

In a way I want to say yes? But I keep thinking that many cars dont even have a tranny cooler on them so the extra heat from that would not nearly be enough to cause the transmission fluid to rise high enough to produce any kind of negitive affect.
I would say that as long as the engine temp is in an acceptable range, the transmission should be ok, too. Even when people have the engine overheat, it does not seem to affect the transmission. Long periods of overheating would not be good for the transmission, though. Remeber that most peolple shut the engine off when they notice overheating and give things a chance to cool. Most any car that has an automatic transmission has some method installed to cool the fluid.

Exactly. Car has a brand new waterpump on it and I believe the temperature is within what you can say is normal temperature - 180-210.

Thanks for your replies!

Re: Movements in engine temperature (picture)

if you have a low temp thermostat in the car, you will see fluctuations in the temperature like this since the fans aren't supposed to kick on till 210.

A4s have a factory oil cooler that has a hose coming off the water pump down to a sandwich cooler design on top of the oil filter, return line goes back to the driver's side tank of the radiator, tranny cooler is in the pass. side radiator tank. (vettes did not come w/ the oil cooler option since they run synthetic oil, no need for it)

Thomas, this is an oddball idea, but check your brakes to make sure the lights are working. The TCC get power off of the brake light switch. The brake switch (above the rubber foot pedal mounted to the bracing) provides +12V to the tcc circuit enabling it to engage while driving. As soon as you hit the brakes and the lights come in, it pulls power from the circuit disabling the clutch so you can come to a stop. You can get a circuit tester and check to make sure you have +12v coming to the brake switch, then press the brake w/ your hand and check the other wire to see if the power redirects, I'ts been a while but I think they are orange for power, white, and some other color, sorry I can't be more detailed.

good luck!

The tacks had fallen off or not been replaced by my mechanic after my engine rebuild a while back. When i was driving fast enough the plastic flap (which would normally be held back by being attached to the other panel) would get sucked onto the surface of the radiator blocking maybe 1/3 of its airflow.

just an idea....

that is something to consider. look for ANYTHING that might block the radiator at highway speeds

The oil cooler was an option. Not all A4's have it.

Stock fans don't come on until 226°.

Okay thanks - I will check, but I believe everything is fine.

I will print out all your replies and give them to my mechanic.

Thanks

Might print this out as well: http://shbox.com/1/exterior_lights.htm

Thanks to Rob, look over towards the upper right hand side of the "B" schematic and you'll see what I'm talking about as far as the brake switch / tcc circuit. This was also on a 95, I worked on a 94 LT1 installing it in a 89 S-10, so my colors are WAY off, not sure if they carried this design through to 96-97 or not, but one way to look at the problem.

good luck!
