Motor shuts down whenever it wants
Given all else you've tried, I'd pull the opti, take it apart and see if anything is obvious. I used to take my stock one apart everytime I took off the waterpump for cam swaps, etc and clean it(you know how that crud builds up on the plug wire terminals). Once you have it off, cleaned and reassembled, you can hook up the opti while you're holding it (battery connected, key on) put on one plug wire to the opti and to your spark tester or even a real spark plug. Now, while watching the plug/tester, spin the opti (in the correct direction) with your thumb and finger. You should either see a bright spark (if consistent and correct) or a missing/erratic spark. You'll notice the fuel pump relay will kick on the fuel pump everytime you do this as well. This is how I discovered my culprit Opti this past July. It sparked very erratically. I bought a replacement from Summit.
I suppose you've already pulled the coil wire and inspected the ends and the connectors on the opti for crud?

I'm so glad to hear you got it figured out. I hope you can start enjoying it again and, THANKS for posting what you found. So many of the guys list a myriad of details on the issue, what they tried, etc but then neglect to define what fixed the problem. Congrats!
