Question Moser 12 bolt owners..

How loud was your rear-end at first? Mine is kinda loud when rolling in 6th gear and on the decel..kinda sounds like an airplane taking off Just wondering how loud everyone else's Mosers are..
Also how long do I need to break it in for?
I ran it for about 4mins on jackstands then went and drove it for avout 15 mins then let it sit..How long do I need to go before laying into them? Hopefully the teeth just need to be broken in and it will quiet down a tad

Did Moser set up the gears for ya or some one else?

It there a spool or posi unit in the rear?

I am not sure if they recommend any specific fluid or not, maybe others can post. I would think that with a spool, any synthetic would work but they may recommend a certain brand/weight.

As far as a posi or clutch type unit, that may require some "special" rearend fluid. I know most do require something extra for the posi unit. The noise you are describing sound more like the gears themselves though.

?????????????????????????????

I would not think it should be that loud thogh, maybe others could post and let ya know how there aftermarket rearends sound like.

I concur with nighttrain. The 12 bolt should be as quite as the oem 10 bolt. If it's noisy now it's not going to get better. And depending on the miles on it, it may be to late to make any adjustments. If you only have that 15 min run on it, have a rearend shop look at it, you may by able to save it.

If you bought it new and Moser set-up the gears, it should be quiet even if it has 4.11's. Sure sounds like the gears to me.

I am kind of sure he wants to hear from people who DO own them

All good remarks but not entirly accurate.

Everyone I know who bought a Moser and had them set it up has some noise. It also depends on what gears you used. if you use GM gear it will be the quietest BUT not the strongest

I went with a strong after market gear and had my gear guy build the rear end out od a Moser kit(he is Moser dealer). Like you on accel it is quiet as a mouse. on decel there is some noise. just like you have.

You should drive it for 400-500 miles to break it in. this serves two purposes. one to get a nice wear pattern started and towo heat cycle the gear set properly. This break in is recomended by all gear manufactures for street use. When this break in is not used they had many returns with the faces scuffed rite off the gears.

It is not hard to do. When i had 500 miles on mine we did the break in service and checked the gears. The pattern was perfect front and back on both gears. I personally checked back lash and it was good.

Took it to the track and pulled the trigger!

that was 6 monthes and a few thousand miles ago.

Good luck!

Lloyd, Cody and I bought these rear ends at the same time. He is expeariencing the same noises that mine has. It says on Mosers website that the gears are going to make noise, because they are set-up for stregnth, not quietness. Most of the other Moser owners I have talked to say that theres are noisy also.

that is 2 owners with the same answer so I am guessing that the noise is normal.

there is a tad of noise on accel in like 5th gear going around 50mph but not too much..On decel its fairly loud when coming down from a higher mph..guess its all normal..Dont really matter to me..it just better not BREAK or LEAK

Mine was set up just a little bit "tight" from Moser. I left it that way. It whines a bit at certain rpms with no load but that is it. Under heavy load it doesn't make a peep. It has been in there over 1 1/2 years, been probably 15,000 miles and had about 700 strip passes on it. I drain and fill twice a year with good old 90 weight gear oil and that it it... Eaton 800lb posi installed.

Sixty foots are high 1.5's, low 1.6's on 28" ET Streets.

Light throttle, decel and float noise from a 12 bolt is normal when its set up to last. If something is wrong(too tight) it will puke fluid out the vent.

No fluid coming out here

Also, is it ok to test the gears on the street..or do I need to continue to break them in?

I would finish the break in Just for a piece of mind. It is not that hard. THEN again a LITTLE romp here and there will not hurt

The biggest thing is the heat cycles. I started with small 10 mile trips and worked up to 60 mile trips. I put all 500 miles on mine in a week Make sure after each trip let it cool off completely

Good luck!

Sounds like yours is normal. Mine makes a slight wine on decel as well. Nothing too big. Otherwise it's pretty quiet.
