I think that the general consensus is that a CAI will give you 5-10 HP on a stock motor.

Just keep in mind that it only gives you that added HP potential at WOT. Any time the throttle blades aren't wide open, they are going to be a bigger restriction than your intake.

I noticed nothing from my CAI. I guess 5-10whp on a 240hp car just is not a big enough deal for SOTP feeling.

I would agree with this.

I had a home made one on the car when I got it, not a bad set up, but filter hung level with radiator so not really getting "cold air". One of my mechanics had a new Moroso unit in the box and I got it for 100.00 and put it on today. Mine is a modded 383 so not stock, but can tell you I noticed a difference in a correctly designed CAI. The moroso has the bracket that isolates the filter below the core support where it can get air off the dam. I cut the corner piece off the facia underneath to give a open hole to the filter.

I really did notice seat of the pants feel off of it. Also make sure the elbow you use from it to intake is a smooth transition and all pipes/tubes are clear paths with the couplings. Anything that makes the air move into an obstruction defeats the whole idea.

The gains will be there, just not enough to notice. You'll probably notice a little more noise in the intake.

I've heard people say that a CAI will improve MPG, but for the life of me, I can't figure out how...

More complete combustion is my guess.

Virtually all the theory I've read indicates that warmer air will result in a more complete combustion and thus more efficiency. Colder/denser air will result in more power due to the greater oxygen content per volume. Of course, the 02 sensors adjust and throw in more fuel. So that should result in more power but lower MPG.
