Hmmmmm.........thanks for the info........it has about 5-7k miles on it and maybe 7 or 8 months of actual driving........do you think it even needs cleaned. I havent had a chance to take it off and look at it, but I just trying to clean everything up so I can run a better time at the track, but after reading a few other posts I'm not sure if I should even mess with it......or maybe I will use some compressed air and blow the dirt out and leave it without washing.

The K&N gauze type filters work better with a thin coat of dirt. K&N recommends a 50K mile cleaning interval, but you could shorten that if you routinely operate under dirty or dusty conditions.

I am contemplating doing the free ram air mod which I know the gains are debatable, but I have lots of time and get bored during the day. I figured the open hole will make it get dirty much quicker, so I figured I would need to clean it before I went to the track the next time. I read that thing k&n said about it being better when a little dirty somewhere also......doesnt make a whole lotta sense to me though.........

Here's a link to a very well done test on oiled gauze, oiled foam and paper filters. It is for motorcycles, but the principles are the same. I like this sort of test, because it isn't like the manufacturer's tests (K&N, Amsoil, etc) that are generally rigged to give the results the manufacturer wants.

The K&N was shown in the independant test to filter better with a coat of dirt on it. K&N's own filter efficiency tests are apparently conducted in this condition.
Another thought.... the K&N can only be "washed' 25 times. After that, K&N recommends that it be discarded, since it has lost its filtration efficiency.
After you read the article in the link, you might be rethinking filter choice.

Well I didnt read the whole thing, but i read a few parts and what i gathered was that the k&n will filter more effeciently and get more particles when a little dirty, but I really dont care much about that and I want the best flowing filter possible. I would think it would definately flow the best when clean and brand new, but when a little bit dirtier it will filter more and let less dirt in. Am I right? I didnt really see much about flow in the article but I would think a clean over dusty/dirty filter would flow better.
Who knows though, the gains or differences between being a dirty or clean one are probably very minimal and wouldnt even be noticed.

Definately don't use pressurized air to blow it out. It'll tear tiny holes in the fabric that'll let dirt through. To tell ya the truth, I buy a new K&N once a year without ever cleaning it. I'm afraid if I cleaned mine, I'd use too much oil and have MAF problems down the road. It's ony like $40 a year anyway.
