No i do not drive the car in winter. I have removed everything associated with the ac and heat.. i mean everything. I ditched the washer solvant tank also.. I have chromoly tubular lower control arms but did not think of those as a weight loss mod. not much room for a fuel cell in these cars.. I have spent to much money on my true dual set up to ditch it for weight loss. I think i will be losing the sound dedning material under the carpet, and the padding in the doors.. Also how do i go about getting rid of the pass air bag? I am also ditching the whole abs unit.

I know the WHOLE dash has to come apart to remove the airbags. I think a search will turn up the instructions. That would be sweet if you got under 3000 lbs. I'm not sure how light the lightest LT1 F-body is....maybe 2800.

i really dont know how accurate the scales were, i dont think they were too far off but....
car '97 M6 Hardtop
things removed or changed for weight reduction as follows
BMR tubular k and a-arms, ALL emissions equipment, cd player, speakers and most of the speaker wiring, ALL carpeting, sound deading material out of doors, rear seat and seat belts including shoulder straps, all of the console (see the ground around the shifter), B-pilar sail panels, all deck panels through out the whole rear of the vehicle, spare tire/jack,
car weighed in at 3188 with a half tank of gas without me in it, i think the scales are about 50-75lbs light, I know its light tho cuz it sits with about 4in gap between the fenders and tires and ground clearance kicks *** with Hooker LT's and 3inch y-pipe
i've got plans of taking out some of the front bumper stuff, supports, washer bottle, AC condensor, compressor and lines, switching over to crank windows and manual seats and putting my fiberglass hood on
I live in IL also and the car is daily driven, the heater box and fan are on the chopping block probably not til spring time tho

Just make sure you don't take the engine out

I just might be an authority on this subject. My approach to weight loss was simple. Since my Z is primarily a drag car, I just decided to take out every thing not needed for drag racing. It sounds like ouy haven't taken out the air box or air bags. The passenger air bag with bracket is about 25# easy. If you want to put the car back together someday I would recommend that you carefully remove it. The dash is very flimsey and easily broken. The light battery suggestion is a good one. Saved me about 20# off the front. My goal is to get down to a 3000# or less raceweight and I should be able to get there even after adding a cage. My car is now about 2800# without the cage. Let me know if you have any questions, I'd be glad to help.

Here is what i want to keep. Carpet, counsle, driver seat, radio, door pannels, dash. Thats about it. Can you explain on how to get the air bag out? I will soon be getting a diffent stearing wheel so i can ditch the air bag. I am adding 29lbs to the car soon.. I just ordered my subframe connectors.. I was pulling a 1.69 60' without them and started to seem some not so good effects.. I don't know weight of trans setups, but i have a th350 is that lighter than the 700r4?

I basically just started removing screws in and around the dash. You have to take out the entire dash to take out the air box and air bag. Be careful and take your time. I lost patience and broke my dash but I don't really regret it. To cover the whole left by the airbox get a piece from billingsley. here is where I got it

I think the TH350 is heavier. I'm planning to go to a 2004r from the turbo buicks. I know for sure the TH400 is much heavier.

Beware of too much weight loss or your car may look like this:

YIKES!!

Not for the faint of heart but hey, it's getting close to what a drag car should look like.

BTW the hood saved about 30# also. The stock one is quite heavy. Any more questions?

thats not a race car its still got the rearview mirror

and for those of you who dont want to ditch the stock steering wheel but want to get rid of the airbag in it, I'm pretty sure Billingsley makes a plate to cover up the hole when its removed, might be a cheaper alternative

True, but I opted for the quick release wheel to make it easier to get in and out after I get a cage put in. Also the wheel is a larger diameter and makes it easier to steer. I nice idea since I have no power steering. It's also an added theft deterrent. Forget about the club, just take the wheel with you.
