misfiring?

The dealer that I was going to by my z28 from said the car was misfiring and the first thing he had replaced was the distributer. Is it normal for him to replace such an expensive part before plugs and wires or something like that? I dont know the outcome of this replacement because its not finished yet.

Re: misfiring?

Generally not a good place to start.... there are numerous less expensive components that could cause misfiring. What method did he use to track down the problem? Was a PCM scan done? Did he put the ignition system on a scope? Either of those methods could have confirmed the source of the problem, if it is actually the Optispark distributor that is at fault. Without those two methods, he may just be playing "replacement part roulette" at your expense.

Helpful hint - Add a "signature" with basic data about your car, like year, model, tranny type and any major mods. Since all years of the LT1 are not the same, it helps people to answer your questions if they at least know the year of the car. In this case, it affects what the dealer could have learned from a PCM scan, since an OBD-II PCM (96/97) can pinpoint the misfires by count to the individual cylinder(s), while OBD-I (93-95) can not.

You are only reducing your chances of getting an accurate response by not including basic info about your car.

Re: misfiring?

oh. I think we figured out the problem. I believe the optispark got wet when they pressure washed the engine. It's a 94 z so it does have an optispark which they were lucky to even find. I heard about 95s have a vaccuum to dry out wet optisparks. are 94's upgradeable to this? thanks
