Mis fire on #2 and mechanic says is either injector or distributor - help.

Ok, so I guess I have a pretty bad mis fire on #2, and only #2. The shop has tested and narrowed it down to either the injector or a distributor problem. They swapped #2 and 4 injectors to try and see if it is in fact the injector but when they fired it back up the mis firing went away. It was doing that the whole time, it comes and goes randomly. He is going to try to see if he can get it to happen again but if he cant then I just have to wait and see.

Car has 60k on it with just over 10k on a new gm service engine. As far as I know the distributor is original unless that comes with a service engine or unless they reused the old one.

Anyway, any ideas or suggestions?

Its a '97 Z28, all stock

If its a single cylinder, it would lead me to believe its a wire/plug problem. I'd replace the plugs and wires, and if its still around, then dig deeper IE: frozen/bad injector or harness, or eventually the opti

me too except that the gm mechanic told me that he checked plugs, wires, compression, etc and said it definitely was not plug or wire problems so......? And that it was definitely either injector or distributor.

In that case, though i'd still recommend doing the plugs and wires (they're about due anyway), it might be time for a new distributor.

Same car year, same mileage, same problem here only on cylinder #3. Bad enought to set a code every 3 days or so. Changed plugs last week and it made no difference. You can bet I'm going to swap injectors first, probably tomorrow and I will post results later. I sprayed water on the wires and the idle didn't change so I'm not that suspicous of the wires. The weird part is that the car runs great, has plenty of power and idles smoothly. it idles a little rougher with the ac on and that is when it seems to set the code but I can't see blaming it on the ac. If the injector doesn't work, wires are next followed by coil and eventually opti if necessary. I'm getting sick of this.

I have a misfire only when decelerating in gear. I was told to replace the EGR or AIR check valves cuz they can cause a misfire when they go bad so check that out. I havent had a chance to change mine.
