Mini Starter not engaging fully!!!

It was fine for a week or so then started grinding right before the motor turns over! I took off that plate and looked at it while cranking and the gear doesn't seem to be going out far enough onto the flywheel? The flywheel is starting to get chewed up pretty good too!! Oh yea it had 1 shim on it, so I took it off and it still does it!! Any ideas guys?

I took the starter back off and the wire that goes from the motor to the solinoid on the starter is burnt and so is the purple wire that goes to the starter is also burnt to hell!!

What kind of starter is it?
(LT1? smaller LT4? aftermarket gear reduction? aftermarket permanent-magnet gear-reduction?)

What brand & model? (part number?)

is the starter too far away from the flywheel to get proper teeth engaugement?
(are you sure it's aligned right and doesn't kick rearward far enough? are the closest 1/2 of the teeth getting engauged/chewed-up? or just the outside-most part of the teeth)

Either way it sounds like you'll need a new flywheel.

Man, I have had my CVR Pro Torque for a year now and I have had zero problems with it. Didnt even have to use the shims it came with. Did have to cut the notch out on the mounting plate.

My dad has a 1997 Chevy Express van and the starter crapped out on it. I looked at the stock GM starter and compared the price to the CVR Protorque and installed the Protorque because it was about 1/3 the price and was a better starter. Now he has a van that sounds like a race car when you start it. I did have to trim the dust shield on the torque converter a little but other than that I didn't do anything to it.

I don't know what brand it is! It was one that my brother had! It's a gear reduction 2hp starter made for a SBC is all I know! It doesn't crind nearly as much now! But still a little! The wire was touching my header primary so I tied it out of the way! It's engaging fully now! Just still grinds a little! Should I put the shim back in that I had on it when it was working fine!?
