which mids suit you best
which mids suit you best
Hey all, im looking to get some mid length headers. Ive been trying to read up on the rk sport, as&m and macs. Ive heard pretty much everyone loves their macs. also heard that the rk sports dont have a D port. Is this correct? Are theyre any negative effects of not using a matched D port. I know the as&ms are the best mids from what i hear, but i dont think i want to spend 750 on headers. The rk sports are on sale for 450 so thats around the price of the macs. I know the macs give good gains but im thinking i should get the rk sports because of the bigger primaries to be prepared down the road. any input would be appriciated, thanks! any dyno gains with each would be great to know too!
Re: which mids suit you best
I like my MAC's a lot.
Rksports are AS&M clones, I believe, but I'm not sure that the coating or the quality are as good (I would assume not at the price). The debate will rage as to whether you will actually need the 1 3/4" primaries, but that's been more than covered on this board with no real solution.
The best evidence that I have seen for the MAC's were dyno numbers from Advanced Induction that showed equal HP and Torque from MAC mids and Long Tubes on an identical head/cam set up. If MAC's are indeed a limiting factor up to 400 rwhp, it must not be significant, but who knows.
Plug access on the MAC's are the best from what I have seen and read (AS&M/rksports look terrible), and installation was about as easy as you could hope for, although the rksports may not be too difficult to install either.
I don't think that you would be making a bad decision either way.

Re: which mids suit you best
I just installed AS&M's, and they were a world of difference over my edelbrocks. The better coating, the larger primaries and the superior design gave me a SOTP gain. I vote ASM, but they're expensive.
Re: which mids suit you best
I'm buying a set of jet-hot coated mac's so i'll tell you how the install goes. From all the reading i did it seems mac and as&m's are the best in the mid-length department (i could'nt find much on rk's) I decided to go with mac becasue they are a little cheaper and it seems everyone is happy with them and the ease of install.

I love my macs. Plug access is GREAT. Taking them out would probably take ten minutes with macs. RK sport, I've never heard anything good. I heard they suck. AS&M I hear are awesome performers but the install and plug access is a joke. Plug access is important to me. If it is at all to you, go with the macs.

I always hear about how Macs have better access than the AS&M's. I would think a small primary tube would net a better access. Is it that or just better design? Just curious. BTW-I love my AS&M's.
